I worked at Kent County, Michigan part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The zoo was a fun environment to be a part of. Teaching kids about my passion made me enjoy going in to work everyday.

    Cons

The keepers do not appreciate the seasonal education staff. Education is where a lot of the money came in to the zoo.

    Advice to Management

It was hard only being a seasonal staff and no room for growth.

I have been working at Kent County, Michigan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The opportunity to work in the public sector to improve service to the community is rewarding. The variety of 20+ departments allows for growth and opportunities that smaller, less diverse companies can provide. The benefits are fantastic. The pay is below average for professional staff while extremely competitive for the union employees.

    Cons

The pace of government can be mind-numbingly slow. The pay rate for professional staff is on the low side.
