I worked at Kentucky Community and Technical College System full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Students were great to teach, overall.
Division and Department heads are competent or better.
Faculty is very supportive with other faculty, staff, and students.
Most employees believe in the mission and educational value of KCTCS.

    Cons

Salaries are generally below national averages.
Work schedules are rarely consistent unless you have tenure.
Not very much communication between the academic side and the technical side.
Too many administrators, not enough full time faculty.
    Adjunct Faculty woefully under paid.
    PPE review system is ridiculous.

    Advice to Management

Stop bragging about how great a place it is to work and do some real community outreach so prospective students understand all the good things you have to offer.

I worked at Kentucky Community and Technical College System part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Most of the classes (at least at the campus I taught) were small but that allowed me to create a more personable classroom experience for my students. I was able to spend one-on-one time in class (as well as time lecturing), so I made sure my students were progressing successfully. Also, the campus I taught at was small, so it was a close-knit community and it was easy to get to know my colleagues and the staff. Lastly, for the most part I was able to pick my own classroom materials, which enabled me to change my class' content semester-by-semester to keep it from growing stale. Overall, I loved teaching here (at least from the teaching aspect of it).

    Cons

Firstly, it's very clear that if one doesn't prescribe to a liberal political mindset, one won't be allowed to advance in his/her career. Thus, KCTCS doesn't truly exhibit tolerance as, if you happen to be non-liberal and/or religious in your views, you will be put on the advancement back burner.

The same holds true for instructors who academically challenge their students. I had a few division chairs tell me to make my classes easier, to not hold them to the same standards as a four-year college would for a similar class. (I taught Humanities courses.) The reason? One was so I could pass more students (so the system valued quantity over quality) and the other was because the system viewed their students as academically inferior to their four-year counterparts. I never heard of such a thing, and it created difficult waters to navigate as I was asked to not lower my standards yet keep them low enough so all of my students passed, even the lazy/apathetic ones who exhibited little to no effort or work ethic.

Lastly, the system as a whole rarely gave raises (every five to seven years, at least as part of my experience) and they are minimal at best (normally around 1%).

Overall, while I loved teaching and working with students here, I became disenchanted by the work environment and eventually resigned.

    Advice to Management

Be tolerant of persons who don't adhere your liberal agenda - that's what tolerance means, giving everyone a chance to hold to their own opinions (though no one is obligated to agree). Also, raise your academic standards rather than lower them: keep your two-year programs' classes on par with their four-year counterparts. Oversimplifying classes only shortchanges students in the long run. Lastly, offer good compensation for staff and faculty - this encourages people to want to work for you and it encourages current employees to stay.

    Pros

I completed a semester long internship with KCTCS and it was really good experience to have.

    Cons

I can't think of a whole lot of downsides to the internship. Slightly unorganized at times, but management is busy so it's understandable.

    Advice to Management

Great internship process. Gave me a variety of experiences and the opportunity to work on a different projects and tasks.
