I have been working at Kentucky Department of Corrections full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Can't recommend working for state now.

    Cons

No raises in past, no one in sight. Problems with pension. High turnover. Always short staffed. Public unaware about no raises. Not allowed to talk to media. No union to fight for us. No idea if or when next raise is. Too many years in to leave.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to high turnover. Let all Legislators know. Stop balancing state budgets by not giving raises. Raise taxes, legalize other things that would bring in money for state.

It's an easy job. Every year you get a raise and paid vacation and fun people to work around. Paid holidays or time and a half pay. State job.

I worked at Kentucky Department of Corrections (Less than a year)

    Pros

Government job with fairly decent benefits.

    Cons

Hostile working environment created by unqualified managers who obtained their position by lying about their qualifications and through their inappropriate relationships with those higher up. As an employee you will be expected to pick up the slack created by these individuals.

    Advice to Management

Check the validity of the qualifications of those you hire. Having an inappropriate relationship with upper level management should not be a qualification to become a "manager." Most of the administrative duties at this institution could be combined with like positions at other state institutions and performed more efficiently at central office in Frankfort thus saving the state thousands,
