I worked at Keystone Strategy full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people and the culture are the biggest pro - it was always a pleasure coming to work. Everyone is extremely talented and work is more rewarding as a result. The work is exciting relative to other strategy firms - involving cutting edge technologies and new problems facing global companies. They've done a good job diversifying their client base recently. There is a lot of trust in employees to manage their own time. Senior Leadership genuinely cares about individual development (e.g. business school preparation) and it shows.

    Cons

Experiences are not uniform across the firm, and can be dependent on what partners / projects you get. Work-life can be problematic for some, though I was able to manage pretty well. The company still feels like a startup with regards to internal processes, and is in that phase right now where it needs to make that jump to put more polish on the whole experience. There is good evidence that this is happening, new trainings, website, etc., but it's still a little too slow for my taste.

    Advice to Management

Become more consistent regarding messages to your employees. Make policies and stick to them - too much is left ambiguous or case-by-case when it doesn't need to be, and it can create anxiety. My belief in how to improve retention in the middle ranks, (EM level etc.), which is a challenge the firm acknowledges, is to facilitate employee opportunities to develop a connection beyond just the consulting work and to the firm itself. Thus, Keystone should encourage employees to get more involved in firm-building and incorporate that more officially into review periods.

    Pros

You'll learn some stuff. Mostly the inverse of to run a small business. Things like, how not to treat your staff, how not to diversify your client base, how not to build a world class team.

    Cons

See above. The business is run like a gas station. The partners pull every penny out and refuse to invest in growth. The business is feeding off the decaying carcass of dying tech titans. If you want to know why the leading tech companies of the 90s are now also rans, join Keystone! They were instrumental in bringing about that decline/

    Advice to Management

Quit. Stop destroying good companies with your pseudo babble. Leave the consulting to the pros like BCG and McKinsey.

I worked at Keystone Strategy full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Managing Partners work tirelessly hard alongside everyone else, feels more like a family than a strategy consulting firm (while still having all of the strategy consulting firm perks!), projects are fascinating and with leading companies who care about pushing the envelope.

    Cons

Sometimes the hours can be challenging when working to meet aggressive project deadlines--but this comes with the territory.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work, really looking forward to seeing the company become one of the global leaders in strategy consulting.
