I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

lots of training for young engineers. 10% 401k on 5 year vesting plan. low cost healthcare. 4 weeks vacation for new employees

    Cons

not to much bad to say. sure it is long hours, but you never feel like you are counting the clock if you love what you do

    Advice to Management

keep on the same path. make sure achievers know they are being rewarded above others. offer stock to younger employees to retain more

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great job security, there is always work somewhere they can send you to. Exciting projects that take you all over the country, decent benefits, 4 weeks of PTO. If work is your #1 priority and you enjoy working construction this is where you want to be.

    Cons

Terrible work life balance, 10+ hour days and a lot of Saturdays and Sundays. Management gives very little notice when you are being moved to new projects, sometimes on days to move across the country. Most people are maxed out on their PTO because you don't have any time to use it. It's very difficult to have a life away from work at any stage of your career here. You have to fight to use any of the benefits they offer or you'll never get them.

    Advice to Management

In my time here they have been trying to figure out why there is such a high turnover rate especially with younger 2-5 years employees. I don't think that will ever change unless they start to allow employees to prioritize life outside of work. Also, the pay is not as good as it seems when you learn what you will be sacrificing. Employees should not have to fight for per diem and trips home to see their family.

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The company has offices in every part of the country and performs nearly all types of construction projects from power, LNG, solar, wastewater, bridges, offshore, etc. The learning opportunities have been above and beyond.

    Cons

Talent alone will not help you. Most promotions and wages are based off of years of service within the company. Very little line cutting. Management differs from district office to district office. Certain districts and the way they are managed leave a lot to be desired.

    Advice to Management

Kiewit is an old business, but the times are constantly changing. Do more to attract top tier talent and get witht he modern ages. The things that used to matter 20 to 30 years ago....when a lot of senior management started, dont matter anymore.

    Cons

    1. Sometimes there is miscommunication between the departments because its a big company. I think this issue is common in large companies. 2. they might assign you to a new job/assignment at any moment. 3. Workload. 4. You might have to work long hours (more than 10 hours) including working from home. 5. Might have to work Saturday/Sunday/Vacation/Holiday if the work requires you that.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - leader in the industry - leader safety - true investment in employees (both internal and third party trainings to obtain industry certificates and licenses worth thousands per year) - great benefits including 100% 401(k) match up to 6% - yearly bonus in form of 401(k) contributions

    Cons

    - 60+ hour weeks not uncommon - weekend work not uncommon - little sense or understanding of work/life balance (common for industry) - issues common in construction management and engineering (i.e. predominantly white male workforce, frequently hostile work environments with rampant use of crude language (inside and outside of the office), etc.

    Advice to Management

    - continue to promote mentoring of young employees - continue to embrace diversity - promote positive reinforcement - promote a sense of professionalism both in the office and in the field - discipline employees who do not conduct themselves professionally

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time for more than a year

    Pros

-Very exciting projects. You will be given lots or responsibility quickly and must be able to handle it. Kiewit is known to bring up new engineers quickly. The best thing about Kiewit is getting them on your resume. I will always recommend Kiewit to any new engineer. Get them on your resume and you will be headhunted nonstop. Put in a few years and move on.

    Cons

-You will work/live/breath Kiewit. I constantly worked at a minimum 70 hrs/wk. Relocation to new projects is given at little to no notice. Expect favorability and un-equal opportunity between colleagues. Kiewit choses your career path and everyone is given different opportunities to move up in the company. Some engineers can move up quickly due to being in the right place at the right time. Others go unnoticed their entire career. Kiewit currently is undergoing a very problematic turnover rate among 1-2yr new engineers. Between Kiewit burnout and lots of better paying jobs with a better work/life balance are out there. The construction market is hot right now and Kiewit isn't keeping up. Kiewit will make many promises to you that will not go farther than a conversation.

    Advice to Management

To retain newer engineers you cannot treat them like cattle. Have a good conversation with new grads about their career goals and ambitions. Respect their personal lives and show that Kiewit can take care of their employees at the individual level.
