I have been working at Kiewit Corporation full-time

    Pros

Great training, good people, team building, unmatched PTO (4 weeks for 0-5 yrs, 5 weeks, etc.), 401k match, stock (performance-based)

    Cons

Prepare to work very long hours with little work/life balance unless you're in an office environment, not planning to move up

    Advice to Management

hold people more accountable, less micro-managing, less politics/favoritism, attitude about working 12+ hours being the norm should NOT be the norm

I worked at Kiewit Corporation full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Some amazing people. Decent benefit package. Being loaded up with responsibilities and "opportunities". Your resume will be outstanding.

    Cons

Work/Life balance is tricky. Old managers refuse to embrace innovation. Just because something has worked for a 120 years doesn't mean it's the best way today. Pay is far below market value, but they hold out the golden carrot of becoming a stock holder.

    Advice to Management

One of the core values is "Our People". Start treating them better.

    I worked at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

Flexible hours and vacation, communal-esque workplace, interaction with work sites across the country, some opportunity to transfer to other positions.

    Cons

There's a concerning corporate culture that actively disenfranchises the low-rung workers, there's no consultation in transferring or increasing job duties, and little-to-no response to feedback. Work-life balance can become intrusive very fast. Many employees don't show concern about it, but inside are bothered by it at least a little. This can happen with such a large work environment.

    Advice to Management

Integrate yourself with your staff, even though there may be many of them. Encourage them to address their pains, and understand that they have valid input as they do the daily work.

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

Good on your resume. Great training. The people are pretty good. Interesting projects. You're given a lot of responsibility right off the bat, which will either build your confidence or shatter your soul.

    Cons

You'll end up working long hours for lousy pay with no work/life balance. You're expected to basically sell your life to the company for a meager paycheck and a "thank you". The annual review process and differentiation is a joke. You're graded by people you don't even work with.

    Advice to Management

Treat your people better. Pay them what they're worth and keep then happy. Listen to your salaried staff when they say they don't want to leave a particular area, especially if you have work there.

I worked at Kiewit Corporation for less than a year

    Pros

Kiewit has a great deal of respect for their employees. They offer a great benefits package and believe in work/life balance.

    Cons

People change positions often so do not get comfortable with a particular individual that you may have to deal with in a specific department.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees needs and issue . Make a genuine attempt to help correct the problem.

I have been working at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

This is the only large company I've worked at where upper management, middle management, and employees generally seem to embrace change and forward progress. Other corporations I've been at tend to become stagnant, two have which have been bought out by more successful companies. So far this seems to be steady employment, and the benefits are great. They emphasize "Kiewit Culture," and it's nice to feel like you're part of something bigger.

    Cons

Sometimes you feel 'lost in the crowd' since it's so large, and the districts are "decentralized," and located throughout the US, so sometimes it feels like you're on an island. There is competition between districts, and it can be difficult sometimes to switch departments and districts, and in some roles there isn't a clear path to promotion or expansion of responsibility. As with any A/E/C company, the deadlines are rigid and intense, and overtime is expected. So, work/life balance is challenging.

    Advice to Management

It's next to impossible to get a raise, since salary requests are sent from middle managers up to the upper managers for approval. Upper management doesn't know most of the district employees, and are unable to really judge if a person is a strong contributor to the company. In fact, a lot of times the middle management isn't really aware of how hard a person works, either. Sometimes when people get promotions, they are promised a raise, but the company typically doesn't "sign" anything, so the promoted individual ends up at the same pay indefinitely. They typically do cost of living raises, though, which is nice.

    I worked at Kiewit Corporation

    Pros

Good work/life balance and enjoyable work setting. Good benefits and compensation.

    Cons

While movement within the company is 'encouraged and supported'; my experience would tell me that my interest in other areas simply put a target on my back. As soon as some lay offs came I was let go.

    Advice to Management

If there is concern or problems with an employee's performance please be direct and to the point. Don't reduce their duties and title while continuing to tell them that they are doing a great job; only to then escort them out the front door.
