LONG WORK HOURS - IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT?

      Jan 8, 2021 - Engineer - Marketing

      Business Outlook

      Pros

401K + End of the Year Bonus + a few additional $$ throughout the year ... Good first place to work right out of college. A good place learn (transition job). Most of people are nice to work with.

      Cons

LONG WORK HOURS, you'll pretty much work 9 + hours a day. This is probably company wide, but this review is how it is in the California region. If they sell you the half work day on Friday where you only work from 7:30AM to 11:30AM — it's not entirely true because the majority of the time, you will work past those hours; till about 3:00PM or longer because there's a lot of work to do and many deadlines that are typically last minute because someone along the process failed to do their work. You may get an end of the year bonus depending on how the company does but you have to balance it out and determine if it's worth all the exhausting working hours you put in. If you don't work long hours and only put in 40-45 hours a week, you'll be judged for not working harder, even if you're an efficient worker. There really isn't much down time, it's go go go! So be ready for really no outside life as work, life balance is difficult thing to achieve in the KH culture. Probably like most places, there's favoritism. There are some in manager/supervisor roles that clearly don't know what they are doing as a leader and have no idea how to manage a team. Don't plan on questioning anything as they will typically become defensive and throw the blame back on you. They need to learn to listen and try to see why and where the person may be coming from. Ask about what "UT" is so you are fully prepared on what needs to be done.

      Money vs. Time

      Pros

Compensated very fairly for the time you put in. Annual salary plus bonuses put it above average. Good place for a young engineer to start a career, lots of opportunity in many different project types

      Cons

Expected to work long hours, and very high expectations for how much work is billed to a project vs admin time. Very competitive atmosphere Direction and learning time is limited for young engineers Vacations hurt your billable time so you don't want to use it

Thanks for your review and feedback. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the opportunity to work on different project types. You’re correct that like many consulting firms, we have high expectations and sometimes long hours, but both of those support our goal of making our clients successful. We encourage our employees to find the work-life integration that’s right for them. This can be challenging at first, so we provide tips and coaching on how to do so, and offer tools like flexible schedules to support this.

      Pros

401k Match (8% to employee 4%) Profit sharing (10% of salary AND bonus) Bonus (varies, but best in industry) The best of the best work here

      Cons

Long hours. Expect to work 46 hours on light weeks, 52+ on heavy weeks. This varies greatly depending on your team and discipline. I’d suggest asking for your entire future teams yearly hours worked during an interview before accepting an offer. This should be easy for HR to provide (public knowledge to all staff) and cuts out all the BS. You’ll be able to divide that number by 26 to get a true feel on the expectations for that team. 6 year vesting schedule. On top of that, you only see your contribution once a year (industry standard is every paycheck). You will not get a contribution for your first year here, meaning if you start working here at the beginning of a calendar year, you will not see a single penny of 401k match / profit sharing for 24 months. Our 401k & profit sharing are distributed on February 15th every year. 30% of our contributions (for the entire year) were wiped out in one month due to COVID-19. Management, consider giving employees their contribution bi-monthly to allow for true cost-basis investing. Low salaries. This is usually not an issue with a bonus & profit sharing, but all of that is possibly gone with COVID-19 impacts. If you calculate your true hourly rate (we are not paid OT), it is much much lower than industry standard. Bottom line. If you’re looking to identify your life as being a civil engineering consultant, this place is for you. You’ll make good money (in the long run). If you’re looking for flexibility and to have free time in your 20’s, look elsewhere. This isn’t 2009, even in this global pandemic there are plenty of opportunities.
