I have been working at Kinder Morgan (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Real low bar set for talent and skill level. So advancement into management is easy if that is what you want. 20 yr contract with Shell. Great area to live in

    Cons

NON UNION and needs to be. Bonus is lowered if you take bereavement leave. Wont tell you what hurts your bonus and they wont tell you how to help the bonus. Overtime is discriminatory. Policies not followed unless benefits company. Classic example of income inequality wages are under industry norm.

    Advice to Management

Trear people fairly and honestly.Pay what industry wages.Follow all company procedures. Start acting like you care about employees.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good short term stepping stone into the industry, decent benefits. Always hiring due to high turnover, especially if you are military.

    Cons

Way low compensation for the volume of work expected compared other controller positions in the industry. Management is under qualified and ruthless, which is one of the main reasons for the high turnover there. Would only recommend if you are desperate or are looking for a short term place to gain some experience.

    Advice to Management

Treat your employees with more respect, this is not the military and you will have a much healthier and more productive environment as a result (and you may even be able to keep a controller for more than 3 years)

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

If you enjoy working in the field this role is perfect. You have opportunities to take on collateral duties to gain experience.

    That's IT!

    Cons

Very poor hiring practices which fosters a cliquish workplace. An environment of exclusion is fostered and encouraged by Supervisors. There is a lack of integrity that is blatant yet nothing is done. Overall my experience has been poor. If you keep to yourself and push through your day it is tolerable.

In terms of pay it could definitely be better. Your start out at $22 and top out at $31. Overtime is virtually non-existent unless you are buddies with a Supervisor (may pick up once the industry improves)

If you need a job to hold you over while you look, this will positions will do. Of course your experience may be different.

    Advice to Management

Management knows there are flaws. However there is only so much they can do before running into legal issues. I definitely think Managers needs to take a more active role in hiring and not leave it to Field Supervisors. Making personnel decisions are difficult but your retention rate will not improve unless tough decisions are made and people are replaced or moved into different roles.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Easy work, good fellow employees, free water

    Cons

Vacation and holiday schedule is horrible, bosses treat employees like middle schoolers, lots of finger pointing, have to answer questions about every expense, don't follow procedures, cut out bonuses and pay raises during downturn, 30% increase in benefit costs, bad upper management that rules by fear, no training or advancement within the company

    Advice to Management

Value employees instead of treating them like a number on a balance sheet, reinstate bonuses and pay raises, instead of using 500 million received in a pipeline asset deal to pay down company debt, reinvest in your employees

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Having a 9/80 schedule is a wonderful plus; however, a lot of the managers will not allow you to take every 9/80 scheduled day off.

    Cons

Poor management; lack of HR interaction; NO work/life balance; extremely outdated systems; cheap

I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, SQE culture (safety, quality, environment). Kinder loves the military and will hire military people for leadership positions whether you have experience or not.

    Cons

Kinder Morgan senior management (above the terminal manager) do not know what they are doing. Communication is lacking from the top down and bottom up too. Trying to get information is like pulling teeth from a new born baby. Watch out for being replaced by a MIT (manager in training) Kinder loves the military and will hire whether they know operations or not, which causes problems of having leaders in place that do not know how to run the place.

    Advice to Management

You have the tools in place to find answers to problems, use them then implement solutions to fix those problems. Your answer to the solution should not be fire everyone and bring in new. You lose too much talent that way. You need to wake up and smell the coffee before everyone leaves. Just because someone comes from the military does not always mean they are the best fit for the job. Some of the MITs brought in from the military could not even get the concept of righty tighty, lefty loosey. If you know operations in the oil industry, you know what I mean. If the management of Kinder Morgan does not, you are part of the problem.

I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was a paycheck and gave me a place to work while I was searching for better employment.

    Cons

The terminal is so out dated it not funny. They loved to hire there friends uneducated kids. They preach safety, but will target you if you have valid concerns. You are always exposed to the weather.

    Advice to Management

Start all over again before someone gets hurt.
