I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Competitive salary and benefits and good work schedule

    Cons

Management is lacking and they are always looking who to blame or fire if something happens. Personnel are reluctant to make decisions because of the repercussions. Upper management relocated CA corporate office to Houston, TX. Not many people took the relocation.

    Advice to Management

Should focus on the processes and procedures when incidents happen not who to fire!

    Pros

Starting compensation is decent along with bonuses and benefits. Upper management does a pretty good job navigating trying economic times to make sure as little layoffs happen as possible.

    Cons

It is very hard to get actual raises. The yearly “merit” increase doesn’t cover yearly cost of living increases. Professional development is non existent and therefore it is very hard to advance on a career path. This company is all about the bottom line and returning value to shareholders. The side effect is that the support to employees is minimal.

    Advice to Management

Spend more supporting your employees. It may impact the bottom line but a happy employee is a productive employee. Provide real training and development programs. Most employees don’t want to stay in their same role their whole working life.

I worked at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Decent Pay, the bottom rungs of the workforce is friendly and knowledgeable.

    Cons

Where to start.... runs so slim that spreadsheets are still used for many tasks that have much better and efficient options out there. Actually had to purchase own or scrounge for office supplies. Bureaucracy runs so rampant that it seems that the company would step over a dollar to pick up a dime if it shows a profit to shareholders. Management culture when dealing with employees is to default to not... trusting employees. Employees are responsible for travel expenses with a reimbursement from the company after completing an arduous and lengthy expense report. Replacement computers take weeks even if they are almost unusable and old (over 8 years old in my case.) Work/life balance can be an issue for some employees. Training is not a priority, it has been stated "we hire experience" by a member of upper management in reference to training. Company is not an industry leader in anything that isn't compliance driven like some of the companies that they acquired (don't go above and beyond what is required of them, yet they expect their employees to). Poor morale across numerous departments.

    Advice to Management

Value your employees as much as you do your shareholders. Realize there is a huge hidden cost in poor morale and antiquated software and systems.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good Benefits and helpful knowledgeable work force

    Cons

People that are not qualified for promotion gets promoted due to politics; and upper management does not care about this. If one complains to HR, nothing happens.

    Advice to Management

When people are leaving a particular group after a new director has been appointed, please examine the root cause.

    Pros

Management was provided a lot of training, better than most companies.

    Cons

Upper Management has a training that tells you that in order to move up in the company you have to have a "Wolf Pack". Company is built on who you know, not what you know. Corporate policies and procedures are horrible.

    Advice to Management

Quit moving up your friends and hire people who know what they are doing.

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Easy work, good fellow employees, free water

    Cons

Vacation and holiday schedule is horrible, bosses treat employees like middle schoolers, lots of finger pointing, have to answer questions about every expense, don't follow procedures, cut out bonuses and pay raises during downturn, 30% increase in benefit costs, bad upper management that rules by fear, no training or advancement within the company

    Advice to Management

Value employees instead of treating them like a number on a balance sheet, reinstate bonuses and pay raises, instead of using 500 million received in a pipeline asset deal to pay down company debt, reinvest in your employees

I have been working at Kinder Morgan full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Overall atmosphere is a good one. Everyone seems to get along and are generally helpful. One does get assistance if/when needed! Working together works!

    Cons

Long hours, lack of appreciation value. There is no input wanted from the workers because it's all about upper management and what they need/want. Many improvements needed, but it's all about growing. Meanwhile, infrastructure is crumbling because $$$ is put elsewhere.

    Advice to Management

Think about the "lower" employees. It's not all about "upper management". Remember, if it was not for us "little guys", you VIPs would not be here right now. A little acknowledgement, besides a normal paycheck, can go a long way!

    I worked at Kinder Morgan

    Pros

Great asset base. Good salaries and benefits. They hire many great people. The work and industry is very challenging and rewarding.

    Cons

Upper management has credibility issues both internally and externally. Backward support systems need upgrading to gain efficiencies. Short term goals are met at the expense of long term strategy.

    Advice to Management

Too much micromanagement. Utilize technology and intellectual capital to enhance effectiveness.
