I worked at Kindred Healthcare full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Many wonderful co-workers. There was some flexibility.

    Cons

Following the acquisition of RehabCare, bonus structure was restructured regularly. Senior Leadership in finance who had no clinical experience was given a key role in Operations. This person was abusive and encouraged like-minded individuals to behave the same. The expectation was to work 14+ hr days and weekends when needed for salaried positions. This same person was involved with TA operations and regularly commented on how "anyone could be a recruiter." HR was not helpful.

    Advice to Management

Initiate programs that will foster a healthy work environment.

    Pros

Great Management Team, who recognized talent and gave more opportunities to advance within departments and to acquire new knowledge and expertise that most companies would have just kept one locked down to the position they had become proficient at. Derenda Price, in particular, was the greatest manager of talent I have ever encountered in a professional setting, and her and Sheri's commitment to be 'first in/last out' was second-to-none in motivating we employees working for them, to go the "Extra Mile", because no matter how hard you worked, your manager was still the hardest worker there! (and on Salary at that!) Even when company was undergoing a Merger which ultimately led to a large lay off the management team was very prudent, yet as transparent as they could be under the circumstances, and prepared the employees for what was to come and the benefits that would ensue should we who would be likely laid off would be entitled to, and kept the atmosphere positive throughout the merger until the last day.

    Cons

None. Even when company was undergoing a Merger which ultimately led to a large lay off the management team was very prudent, yet as transparent as they could be under the circumstances, and prepared the employees for what was to come and the benefits that would ensue should we, who would be likely laid off, would be entitled to. They kept the atmosphere positive throughout the merger until the last day of the Merger and left me wishing I could have continued to work for such a great company and manager

    Advice to Management

Keep Derenda Price as long as you can. She is invaluable to the new Gentiva Company and you will be happy with the positive work she puts in and the management of all talent you put under her!

I worked at Kindred Healthcare part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Loved the work - helping others, caring for patients, and service towards others are all great things that I enjoy doing. Coming from a background of service work in the medical field in various forms as a volunteer and some research experience in college, I thought that this would be something I could do long-term.

    Cons

Working with any group of people can be challenging, but when those that you work with and for disobey clear rules that are set in place to protect those that are being served, that's completely wrong.

    Advice to Management

Take real time and consideration into those that you hire - do not hire based solely on educational experience or networking connections. Take time to get to know those who are looking to apply for these positions, because they matter more than you think.

I have been working at Kindred Healthcare full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There are multiple locations nationwide, so opportunity to relocate if necessary.
At the local/District level, the comraderie is great.

    Cons

Very weak benefits package; no 401k match AND employees are limited to contributing only 4% of income!!!! This is a HUGE disadvantage.
Terrible operations infrastructure; none of the centralized 'support services' provide acceptable performance. Very short-sighted decisions are made to cut expenses without any understanding or concern about how difficult it makes it for the hospitals to function.
The disconnect between Division/Corporoate leadership and the facilities who actually run operations and generate revenue is remarkable; therefore, disastrous decisions are made without reasonable understanding of the impact on the actual functioning of the hospitals.

    Pros

Lots of learning experiences for new nurses. Opportunity for overtime always available

    Cons

Lots of turnover, even on management level. Patient assignments are difficult at times, due to number of patients at a time.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to staffing ratios. Keep encouraging new nurses to learn and grow!

I have been working at Kindred Healthcare full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Love the resident, still there because of them. The nurse on the back chart of my hall GREAT and so helpful.

    Cons

Unorganized, management does nothing about things that should be address, more worried about what color scrubs the nurses are wearing than patient care. Nurses and other staff get away with not performing daily duties. Staff say what they will not do. Some on management team UNPROFESSIONAL and needs to learn how to speak to their staff.

    Advice to Management

When staff states what is not being done for a resident that can cause harm address the issue. Don't wait until family or responsible party becomes upset and want a meeting to come and hound the nurse that brought the issue to your attention. Show your staff (the ones that actually do their job) that you appreciated them. Let them know that they matter and a vital part of the time. Don't just approach them when you need them to fix an issue that some else caused and not tell them thank you. That's what makes good staff find a new workplace to call home.
