    Negative Outlook

I have been working at King Saud University full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The money. "Get it and run" is the strategy employed by most expatriates. But it is hardly worth the effort.

    Cons

Having worked in Saudi Arabia for five years now, I am looking forward to leaving and never coming back. As universities go, King Saud University is a complete joke. One reads the various mission goals and other colorful decorations on the building walls and sees the typical Saudi tendency to aim for appearances not substance from the very first encounter. The whole bureaucracy is a dinosaur, the simplest processes... are a complete nightmare to navigate. Students on campus are generally loud, noisy, rude and hardly have any kind of academic character, though relatively nice to interact with in person and in class. Teaching, however, is hardly what is happening here, in this highly mechanical interactive curriculum. The English Department is ran by a Saudi who is invisible, and has "line managers" who trickle down the powerpoints emailed to them from above. Mind numbing interaction in a mind numbing environment. With the oil prices plummeting, the ship looks like it's going to beach anytime. Don't get on board.
