I have been working at Kingsborough Community College

    Pros

Many Kingsborough staff have been there for quite a few years which speaks to the level of committment they have for advancing the field of higher education. KBCC staff are supportive, bring energy to work every day, and really help to foster staff growth and development.

    Cons

CUNY is a huge system to navigate and it can be easy to get lost in the bureaucracy.

    Positive Outlook

I worked at Kingsborough Community College part-time

    Pros

Good place to work generally. People are friendly. New part of campus are nice. My supervisor was supportive and helpful.

    Cons

Campus is very large and it's easy to be overlooked. A lot of layers of administration, typical of CUNY.

    Advice to Management

Higher pay would help, along with increased benefits. Providing better ways to connect with fellow employees would be beneficial to everyone.

I have been working at Kingsborough Community College part-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The campus is absolutely lovely since it is located by the ocean. Most of the people who work in the offices are friendly and helpful (with some exceptions).

    Cons

As at all CUNY schools, the pay for adjuncts is abysmal and raises happen very rarely since it takes forever for a new contract to be negotiated. Also, the HR department is a bit of a mess. If you do any extra work (fill in for another lecturer, etc) expect it to take months to be paid.

I have been working at Kingsborough Community College full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Generally a culture supportive of professional development. Many faculty and staff with long tenures, generally welcoming of "newbies".

    Cons

Long tenures of faculty and staff makes advancement difficult. Delayed contract for professional staff and faculty is negatively impacting morale (this is CUNY-wide).

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Kingsborough Community College for less than a year

    Pros

Interesting, dedicated coworkers within my department. Great students to work with, challenging work. Benefits, decent pay for hours worked. Lots of days off due to holidays, campus schedule, etc.

    Cons

Unfortunately, CUNY tends to treat its employees like they are disposable, which we are since there is always someone else to pick up your contracted position when it expires, since CUNY as a whole hates to give people full time permanent positions. Despite the expansion of my program across campuses, upper management and decision makers do not want to hire people to accommodate the influx of students.

    Advice to Management

Give employees the opportunities they deserve.
