I have been working at Kingsborough Community College part-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Easy work, flexible hours, medical benefits, education reimbursement, not always busy so you may have time to do personal things such as studying for school.

    Cons

Very difficult to advance into full-time position without a bachelor's or master's degree. To become full-time you must take an exam that is administered every two-three years and even once you take it, they may not hold the hiring pool for another year or more. For full-time positions that require a bachelor's degree or higher, the position is usually already filled; they are just posting the title for the... formalities. Pay is very close to minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

Make an effort to keep the good part-time employees -they are few and far in between. Don't be so resistant to change. Be more professional with the students and each other.

I have been working at Kingsborough Community College full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The students, the view, the programs. The one on offered to students is amazing. So many staff and faculty members really care and go to bat for their students.

    Cons

Big system takes a long while for change but that's expected working for a larger system. Some offices could benefit from more full time staff.

    Advice to Management

Listen to those in the trenches!

I have been working at Kingsborough Community College for less than a year

    Pros

Interesting, dedicated coworkers within my department. Great students to work with, challenging work. Benefits, decent pay for hours worked. Lots of days off due to holidays, campus schedule, etc.

    Cons

Unfortunately, CUNY tends to treat its employees like they are disposable, which we are since there is always someone else to pick up your contracted position when it expires, since CUNY as a whole hates to give people full time permanent positions. Despite the expansion of my program across campuses, upper management and decision makers do not want to hire people to accommodate the influx of students.

    Advice to Management

Give employees the opportunities they deserve.
