I have been working at Kirby Company part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Kirby is very similar to any other sales job, anyone that complains about the commission and pay structure thinks that this is just like any other (retail, restaurant 9-5) job. Kirby is an opportunity, for you to make money, win prizes, improve your people skills, and potentially own your own business. Every office is independent, so the way it's run as well as the pay structure will vary, my location includes a base pay for canvassers and dealers (provided you've done enough demos/set enough appointments) and it's completely reasonable.

    Cons

Like other sales jobs, there are long hours, and the pay is either commission only or based on how many demos you do. Your recruiter should make all this very clear to you though.

    Advice to Management

At least at my office, the recruiter is very vague about the actual job description until the orientation. This makes sense because if you told people up front that we sell vacuums, a lot of people who might actually enjoy the business would be scared off. However, I personally don't feel comfortable lying to people like that.

    Pros

Unlimited earning potential. Great product. Vacation bonus trips.

    Cons

Work long hours, you get nothing if you dont sell anything. 75+ hours.

    Advice to Management

Add a temporary base salary for 90 days for new employees in order to invest in your emplyees and stop bad recruiting practices

I have been working at Kirby Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Kirby Co is ONLY in Cleveland, OH and Andrews, Tx. Any other locations are NOT truly the Kirby Co, but independent distrubutors. The corporate office & factory (in Cleve) has excellent culture, employees are like family. Personal and professional development is encouraged. Coworkers and supervisors, as well as other depaetments havr all been very kind, professional, and great to work with. High quality product manufactured in USA.

    Cons

Pay is a bit low. Some systems could be updated. Being confused with individual distributors -especially that have had contracts ended for not complying with Kirby policies- is very frustrating.

    Advice to Management

Join the 21st century in technology. Keep treating your workers well.

I worked at Kirby Company full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - had a very family feel
    - most of the coworkers were quite helpful and happy to work
    - boss was very energetic

    Cons

    - very unprofessional in terms of vulgar language towards each other and/or the customer and maturity of some were quite questionable. High school like atmosphere
    - lied, lied and lied some more to get people through the door of a shady building. Was told it would be a call center and turns out to be anything but.
    - 15 showed up for orientation, and by day 3 only 3 remained and I left the following day
    - ridiculous long hours
    - felt very intrusive on people in their homes; constantly feeling like a bother
    - had to make 12 presentations / 24 appointments or won't get paid
    - lying / harassing to clients to get through the door
    - turnover rate must be incredibly high. Constantly hiring because employees keep quitting

    Advice to Management

Just grow up, and run your business like a professional.

Stop lying to future employees about what the job is.

I worked at Kirby Company part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Meet friends
    Great pay
    Vacations
    Room for growth within company
Don't need a license or car

    Cons

Working all day. 9am-9pm maybe even 10-11pm!
Knocking on random doors in the middle of nowhere.
Had to get a certain amount of demos to get paid.
Six days a week maybe even seven!
Working in every weather condition (even snow&ice!)
Vacuum is heavy and not everyone lets you inside.
Not hourly so if you don't get the demos you don't get paid.
Morning meeting consists of the manager putting everyone on blast for what they did wrong the day before.

    Advice to Management

Give some kind of pay! Even if people don't get then 12 or 15 demos. You could at least pay hourly or pay a certain amount per demo done. Otherwise all that driving and being out all day is a waste of time!!!! Also, if the grounds and driveways are Icy, let us go home!! We got stuck in EVERY driveway we went into because the rain freezes into ice or there is just tons of snow.

    Pros

You can earn a great living. The Sky's the limit. 5 star hotels. Travel where you wish. Believe and succeed. DREAM......

    Cons

You must work hard. The business attracts a lot of people with questionable backgrounds. In today's world I would research the numbers.

    Advice to Management

How high up do the (ahem)....negative (for lack of a better word) behaviors go?

    Pros

CAN make a descent amount per week, and learn how to lie your butt off to get in the houses. Fun people in some cases to work around in the office.

    Cons

Where to start, they have you start selling at 3-4 pm. And stop around 11pm to midnight. Walking alone at night door to door in a strange neighborhood ALONE then they will come with a different car and pick you up.

    Advice to Management

Start early in the day, stop selling when it gets dark, we look like prostitute's walking up and down neighborhoods that late at night. Create a buddy system especially for the single females.
