Best Company I've Ever Worked At

Nov 19, 2020 - Guest Services Coordinator in Chicago, IL

      Pros

Awesome company culture- very positive and nurturing environment. Great benefits. Plenty of opportunities for growth, development and vertical movement. Friendly staff/attorneys/firm. Nice employee perks. Plenty of training- and more if needed. Good work-life balance. Amazing place to work- which for me is a major win for a law firm!

      Cons

Would have liked more in-office training (I was provided lot's of virtual), but was unavoidable due to covid and having to wfh.

      Pros

Great culture Treat employees well Great benefits Gain a lot of experience, especially in the legal field Plenty of people to ask for help; you are never left in the dark when working on a task Generous bonuses and salaries Team atmosphere Not many opportunities to work from home unless you are an attorney or senior staff

      Cons

Hard to move departments and grow within the company Attorneys can be unrealistic about expectations Can be stressful with many jobs needing to be done ASAP With many practice assistants you can sometimes feel as though you are just a number Not much interaction with bosses in our department except for review time

Get ready to earn your salary

      Dec 4, 2015 - Non-Attorney in Chicago, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Kirkland offers great benefits... maybe even the best in the city. Daily continental breakfast, generous time off policy, family day, discounts, dc contribution just to name a few... Employees are smart, driven and friendly. They are exposed to a variety of work and there's ALWAYS something to do. It is also nice to have so many different departments that offer evening and weekend hours. Training opportunities and varying projects have helped mold me into an employee with a higher skill set.

      Cons

You will earn every single penny working at Kirkland. There is so much work and expectations can be unreasonable at times given the resources and time necessary to complete a project but if you can handle working at Kirkland, you will be able to work anywhere. It also takes too long to weed out under-performing staff members.

      Senior Litigation Paralegal.

May 6, 2018 - Senior Litigation Paralegal in Chicago, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great benefits, plenty of training at the start of employment as well as on-going, high profile cases, working with the best legal minds in the field, many departments using the most innovative and current technologies.

      Cons

Hyper political, cut throat environment. Not for the faint of heart. A good number of longer term employees not up to date on technologies with poor supervisory skills. Can be difficult to work with colleagues with such vastly different skill sets and talents with the same titles. Extremely long and unpredictable hours. Expected to miss plans, vacations, events at the whims of the attorneys. Truly expected to be at their disposal 24/7.

Junior paralegal - Great entry level job for someone wanting to be in the legal field

May 15, 2017 - Junior Paralegal in Chicago, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great benefits - breakfast everyday, overtime meals, overtime transportation home, 401(k) plan easy to get on board with. Great amount of holiday time off considering it's such a large firm - they let you off 2 hours early the Friday before a long weekend which is fantastic, but you can't always capitalize on it because the attorneys will need things last minute since they know you won't be there Monday. However, you get double time if you work during those two hours till 5, so really it's not a terrible deal! Double time pay for weekends and vacations, 1.5 time for every hour you work over 40 hours during a week. So great compensation if you're working tons of overtime. I love my senior paralegal but it's somewhat luck of the draw. Most are great, but there are one or two nightmares around. Luckily I haven't had to work with them much. You mostly stay within your normal team.

      Cons

Sometimes difficult to make billable hour minimums depending on your team and how cases are moving. Work flow isn't always consistent, as sometimes all your cases are crazy busy and you have overtime/full day of billable hours, and sometimes everything is dead and there is nothing to do. Can be nice in some aspects to get breaks, but also nerve-wracking since you're not meeting billable hours. Having to constantly search for more billable work in these periods. However, some teams never get breaks and have constant overtime, so it really just depends on your team. Also, it's difficult to figure out when to take time off since sometimes they'll need you to be working last minute, even if you already have plans. I had to miss a planned vacation because of this once (though I was temporarily working for another team). My team is usually pretty flexible with that, but it's still difficult to make any set in stone vacation plans since you don't always know when attorneys will need you. Also, sometimes you feel bad taking any time off since you're at the bottom of the totem pole, but obviously in some situations it's unavoidable.

      It's a great place to work if you don't want/have a life

Apr 12, 2012 - Case Assistant in Los Angeles, CA

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Excellent opportunities to learn and practice the skills that will help you out in the long run. An excellent place to start out if you are new to the field and need the experience. Great benefits, nice people to work with (attorneys and support staff).

      Cons

Very stressful, long hours, low base pay. Unless you have an "in" with upper management or work 100 hours a week you will not be promoted. Although the attorneys are nice, you still fee like a second class citizen in their eyes.

      Pros

Great benefits, flexible work hours available for some positions, professional environment where people are valued

      Cons

Office politics exist and can be a stumbling block. Administrative functions are not always focused on what is best for the firm. Rather they seek to sustain their headcount and budget.

      Pros

Great Benefits, and opportunities to grow with the Firm. Work life balance is in line in with similar size Firms.

      Cons

As the company is going through a rapid growth phase for the last few years, running into some issues with manual processes. That also means Great opportunity to automate
