I have been working at Kirkland's (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I love it there. I've been there for ages and they always work with me. I enjoy the merchandise and the customers. We have an amazing staff and everyone works together. Caring about each other and keeping communication open has helped so much. Other stores are great and we all keep a line of information. We are reasonably proceed so it isn't a hard sell. DM is fun and understanding. Don't have excuses, but know your reasons for doing something.

    Cons

A lot has to be done in a short amount of time. When we try new things a lot gets promised and it never comes out that perfect. We do what we can with what we have. Low pay and not enough hours to accomplish everything so store managers end up working more than necessary and stew easier because of it.

    Advice to Management

Give more hours to the staff to help the store. Use it towards off hour tasking all year to keep the store looking good so that your guests don't see as much or feel guilty for randomly needing a question while someone is multi taking. They won't approach and forget when the follow up greet happens.

Fun environment, employee discount, different things to do in-store

    Cons

    Advice to Management

I have been working at Kirkland's (Less than a year)

    Pros

Bi-weekly direct deposit, friendly management that truly supports an open door policy, low drama. Very flexible hours, willing to work around all kinds of schedules.

Offers customers easy access to coupons, which typically makes them happier and easier to work with.

Associates get 20% discount, managers get 40% discount on purchases (but may NOT use this in combination with any other discount offer except when redeeming rewards program points.)

The store and general work environment is very fragrant (because of the candles and sachets) and leaves your clothes smelling wonderful! (versus, say, working fast food)

Follows a flexible-ish dress code instead of a strict store-issued uniform policy

    Cons

Hourly pay hovers near minimum wage/minimum "competitive" pay. Semi-annual reviews only increase minimally (typically up to 30 cents at a time)

Sometimes dealing with cranky, rude, or impatient customers

Sometimes understaffed for the foot traffic expected during a particular time of day.

    Tasks are repetitive.

Constantly pushed to upsell and sign people up for the store credit card. (But what retailer doesn't these days?)

Requires working on or close to certain holidays, (for example Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving)

    Advice to Management

Offer employees a greater incentive to sign people up for store credit cards and bigger pay increases during reviews. Don't instruct managers to hold back on scores just to stay under a certain pay increment when reviewing employees. Give healthier wages to your managers also, this will do long-term wonders for employee/staff morale which in turn increases motivation and ultimately happier customers who will make more purchases.
