I have been working at Kirkland's part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Good discount as a manager; usually flexible with hours; improvement in some of their products; good place to work if you are a people person

    Cons

Unfortunately, more cons than pros. Kirklands's pays more than minimum wage but for what they want you to do, it's not worth it. Micromanaging seems to be the new deal. You have to document everything you do and everything you say when coaching team members. Big on credit cards, but most people don't want them. You task a lot and hours are cut so customer service suffers. Changing floorsets and promos almost constantly. You have to be able to climb ladders, and lift heavy furniture and products. Freight is ridiculous. You can tell I'm over it at the moment. It's not the best place to work if you don't want to get hurt as it is almost unavoidable.

    Advice to Management

Pay more for the work you want done. Allow more hours...more ppl on the floor. Hire ppl that do nothing but Freight. Teams would be great! What you do now is archaic and not efficient.

I have been working at Kirkland's part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

See new products and the people you work with.

    Cons

Associates get 20% off everything but associates are not allowed to use a coupons even if it is better than your own discount. Example we can't use the coupon to get 30% off a single regular priced item. Why are customers able to get better discounts than your own hard working faithful employee. You can't even get your discount online. If you try to order online and use a promo code Kirkland's will police it and you they will just cancel your order and credit your account. WTF employees are treated like roaches? Bad news for you Kirkland's you are losing sales and money? With they retail business are going why on Earth would you pass money up. Now I've heard that they are going to be banning employees use of their discount on clearance items starting next week. What's the benefit of working for you? Nothing really after years of working for you the few benefits you get are being reduced THANK YOU KIRKLANDS. Their raises are a joke. Their is little to no training. Was hired as a season. Takes years of working on the job to get trained the right way,. They just expect that you know how they want everything? Also managers sit on the office most of your shift sitting on their duffs. They claim to be doiing paperwork. No most of the time they are chit chatting amongst themshelves, doing stuff on their phone or nothing.

    Advice to Management

Don't treat your associates or your employees like garbage. Pay them better and give your employees the option of getting the better discount with the coupon in lieu of using their employee discount. Fully train your associate whether they be seasonal or part time. You will be better off in the long run. Pay your people better

I have been working at Kirkland's full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Ever changing merchandise, relatively flexible scheduling to the needs of the business, friendly people, customer service oriented. Fast paced, and always something to do.

    Cons

Technology and reports are behind the times. They are slow to update and adapt to changes. They want to compete with other retailers but do it in the cheapest and slackest way possible. The software is usually slow and malfunctioning, and while they have "rules" when it comes to policies dealing with customers - they don't enforce them and the customers then walk right over the employees and regulations.

    Advice to Management

Kirkland's is a fun place to work and I enjoy my time here, though i would never be able to live solely off of this salary - so for me it's a hobby as my husband makes most of the money for us. The merchandise is decent, but improving quality could drive a higher dollar ticket and patron.

I have been working at Kirkland's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only positive thing I can say about this company is it is "flexible" if you are a part-time sales associate and needing no more than 15 hours per week.

    Cons

No benefits even when forced to work 35+ hours weekly. No work-life balance. Company DENIES your request to attend Sabbath services, weekly.

    Advice to Management

The way upper management treats store-level employees is contemptuous and borderline illegal. You drive away true talent. Not the Christian company you pretend to be!

    I worked at Kirkland's full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very lean staff, ton of responsbility

    Cons

1.) You will be underpaid as compared to the rest of the retail world. Other retailers in the greater Nashville area will take your co-workers away because they all pay more.
2.) Once they switched CEO's the company went downhill FAST. Unrealistic financial expectations, outdated product & chaos in the supply chain.
3.) Lack of diversity on the corporate level. Lack of diversity when considering the customer base. What made kirklands successful in the deep south years ago will not translate nationwide in the future.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees more. Diversify and embrace other cultures.

I have been working at Kirkland's full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The only positives I can think of are the customers are nice and the employee discounts if you like the products .

    Cons

Management the District Managers change constantly and that means the rules change like the wind. The district managers have very little experience but have been with the company for several years so they move them up and they have no multi unit experience. So far, the latest one has cleared 3 managers and 6 assistants.

    Advice to Management

You keep changing all the rules. Go try and work in a real store out of your box where you have cut payroll but increased freight. Then decide how it is possible to do everything you are wanting. Most people like their jobs, not their managers! Here's your sign!

    I worked at Kirkland's part-time

    Pros

Gain experience in retail, cashier experience with high volume of customers, pretty easy workload

    Cons

Fluctuating work schedules, no true "training" other than videos, didn't hire anyone (as they stated they were), pushes you to get credit apps

    Advice to Management

Do some sort of shadowing before throwing seasonal workers out onto the floor

    Pros

    Easy job
you get the hang of things quickly
     friendly customers

    Cons

There'd be a lot of times where the store was just dead and there wasn't much to do besides the usual cleaning things up, rearranging items, etc.
Managers made it seem like no one could help you carry something especially if it was heavy
    No consistent schedule

    Advice to Management

Take more time to train your seasonal employees

    Advice to Management
