I have been working at Kirkland's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Flexible shifts, visual display work, great pricing of product, on-trend decor, wonderful co-workers, plenty of opportunity for prmotion,

    Cons

Extremely unrealistic expectations, store run on a shoe string budget with an enormous workload. Upper management doesn't care about staff being stretched too thin, they just expect more and more and give you no support or payroll to do anything.

    I worked at Kirkland's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Part-time hours usually flexible to when you're available. I worked full time & started working for Kirklands around Thanksgiving for a seasonal position. They asked me to stay on after the season had ended. This was a friendly, flexible work environment & I quite enjoyed the people I work with.
Management ALWAYS backed me up if a customer disagreed with something I did or said OR if I just wouldn't give them a discount just because they asked. This is something that meant the world to me.

    Cons

It's retail. So there's that. It comes with all the typical retail work drawbacks. Open early, close somewhat late. Irritable customers during holiday season. Cleaning store.

    I worked at Kirkland's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I loved everyone at my store, we all got along really well and we were one of the top performing stores in the district. The discount was good and for regular team members the job wasn't too hard either.

    Cons

The only full time positions in the store are store manager and senior assistant manager. But the company still expects the same amount of work done in less time for part time managers.
The pay is low, starting at 8.00 in most stores. As an assistant manager I only made 9.09 and was expected to work as though I was full time without the benefits.

    Advice to Management

Promote from within, don't hire from outside for district positions.

    I worked at Kirkland's part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

They had good hourly pay and I worked with very nice people.

    Cons

They basically didn't train me, so I kind of just watched what everyone else was doing. However, with working over the Christmas break, it was highly difficult to learn that quickly.

    Advice to Management

Take the time to train your employees.

    I worked at Kirkland's part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked with a good group of sales people: friendly, helpful and supportive to each other to do the job well and provide great customer service. Liked that there were different tasks assigned so not always doing the same thing each shift.

    Cons

Manager always finding fault with employees: manger and assistant manager told us how to do things differently so there was often conflict in procedures. After I had quit a friend of mine went into the store for the first time and called me and asked me how I was able to clean the whole place in one hour...well, I was told on the training tape that it would be a team effort. I found out my first late shift that I would be cleaning the entire store myself, no one else...that policy continued all summer and fall until holiday help was hired and 2 of us worked the closing shift together. A very physical job and lots of work to accomplish each shift ( besides ringing up customers) for minimum wage.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your employees, they are the backbone of the store, and they make sure customers are satisfied and they keep the store running well.

    Disapproves of CEO

    I worked at Kirkland's full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay can be good depending on where you live. PTO is good and usually reasonable.

    Cons

Way too much micro managing. Unless you're the CEO you apparently are not capable of making any in store decisions.
Part time employees only get about 10 hours a week. Never enough payroll in budget to complete all the tasks given to you. Lots of last minute sales and changed to event sets make a very stressful work environment.

    Pros

    + Talented team members
+ Tons of learning opportunities to gain valuable experience
+ The company continues to expand, with no signs of slowing down
