I have been working at Kirksey full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Strong benefits package; excellent culture; family friendly; mother's room; sit-to-stand desks; plenty of daylight; no micro-management; freedom to come and go as you please.

    Cons

Lack of supervision; hard to get into the "cool kids club"

    Advice to Management

While the "mentorship" program is a box checked-off, it takes more of a consorted effort to set-up design fees so senior designers can truly mentor a junior designer. You old-heads won't be there forever. You need to learn how to pass the torch. Also, the studio principal should NOT be so heavily in design. You cost too much and you steal away opportunities from the senior designers. You should be more focused on bringing in more business and leading not pulling out your straight-edge and tracing paper!

I have been working at Kirksey full-time

    Pros

Fun group of people and lots of small perks like food and events. Lots of smart individuals that contribute meaningfully to the company's success.

    Cons

Disorganized leadership with no clear vision. No pulse on the competition, okay with being average. Teams are not unified in their approach to running the business, which leads to disparity between groups.

    Advice to Management

Decide what you want to be, then focus on taking the steps to execute that goal. Do what you say you will and try new things. Push harder for higher standards across the company.

    Approves of CEO

I have been working at Kirksey full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great people, great work, cares about employees, helps pay for licensing, lots of perks, leader in sustainability, awesome firm culture

    Cons

I don't really have many bad things to say. I wish I would have gotten an automatic raise when I got licensed but I didn't.

    Advice to Management

A raise after licensing would help kirksey retain its new architects more.

I have been working at Kirksey full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Fun perks & atmosphere
Nice offices with plentiful free parking
Employees are encouraged to pursue licensure & firm helps with those efforts

    Cons

Mediocre design (their buildings tend to look alike)
Way too many VPs and EVPs for that sided company (27 execs to approximately 150 employees). Several should retire....
    Pay is low

    Advice to Management

    Thin out the top layer

    Pros

Hours, people, culture. They want you to get licensed and will support your pursuit of it. A lot of interest in sustainability, LEED, green, etc.

    Cons

They are more of a business firm than a design firm. They have some nice projects, but you're not going to find the most innovative design here.

I worked at Kirksey as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

All employees are extremely knowledgeable and eager to help. I felt welcomed and gained so much from my coworkers. The company has lots of perks - vendor happy hours, lunch & learns, monthly birthday parties, bowling team, etc. Lots of energy at this firm.

    Cons

Kirksey only has a single office in Houston and works primarily on domestic projects, so anyone looking to work at a larger, more "international" firm may not find as many opportunities here.
