I have been working at Kirkwood Community College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Friendly staff, solid leadership, good planning for the future.

    Cons

Some financial conditions have prompted them to outsource some administrative functions like IT to outside vendors.

    Advice to Management

Don't forget about your people at all levels, especially sub-60K, they are the ones who got you here, not just the high rollers.

I worked at Kirkwood Community College full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. Employees genuinely care about students. Cutting edge community college under outstanding leadership (President Starcevich). School very involved in community.

    Cons

Because Kirkwood is such a great place to work, it can be tough to be promoted in the area you begin working.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Kirkwood Community College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Right on campus so it is a great place for students to work. Also very flexible with students courses.

    Cons

Management isn't very great. They are doing some cut backs so less hours for students. And can't sit down or do Homework even while the store has absolutely no customers coming in.

    Advice to Management

Give students the hours they ask for. And let them do Homework since it is a student job!

I have been working at Kirkwood Community College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Organization promotes innovation, and isn't afraid to try something that no-one else has done before. Flat administrative structure makes for better communication. Decent benefits. School has good resources for someone new to education.

    Cons

Starting pay is low, making it tough to attract top notch talent. Faculty union tends to protect underperforming employees instead of working with the organization to motivate them. A great school that refuses to recruit students or advertise much.

    Advice to Management

Set some sort of expectations for underperforming employees and work on motivating them to be a part of the team or set up a method with the union of replacing them with folks who want students to succeed. It's tough to want to be innovative if it means carrying someone else's weight duty wise at work.

I have been working at Kirkwood Community College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Easy going and great coworkers, decent pay, and working at a college is great. Very good learning work environment too

    Cons

Not much room for growth. Cedar Rapids in general is growing more and more dangerous. Seems the shootings occur closer to kirkwood every year

    Advice to Management

Hire from within for higher up jobs to open up more entry level positions

    Pros

Always a very supportive environment, coworkers are all nice and a nice atmosphere to work in

    Cons

Sometimes it felt like budgets got put before workers, but that's typical

    Pros

Great benefits and time off. People are friendly and the campus is very nice. I feel like I am making a difference in my work.

    Cons

Low pay, especially when they re-did the pay bands. I feel there is a large turn over in staff in certain departments.

    Advice to Management

Go back to the old pay grades. The new pay bands have employees starting about $6000 less than they would have.

I worked at Kirkwood Community College part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Enjoyed my co-workers. Enjoyed the job. Enjoyed serving the quest because I enjoy customer service face to face or in a call center environment.

    Cons

Washing dishes. Breaking down rooms after events ended. With that being said, we always made the most of it. The cons were never that bad. I prefer a call center environment. There was not an option for medical insurance.

    Advice to Management

Work on getting medical insurance for employees.
