I have been working at Kitchell full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Got to work directly with owners
Got to see projects all the way through and gain full project experience
Employee owned company, but I wasn't there long enough to get a stake in it.
Got taken out to lunch by project managers every once in a while.

    Cons

Worked mostly on the jobsite by myself
Supposedly the Norcal office culture is different than the SoCal one
During my time there, there was some internal issues with upper management, It has since been resolved
They couldn't find the courage to let go of a person we all knew wasn't doing his job

    Advice to Management

Culture is very important to people; make sure people know when they do a good job
Don't be lazy with yearly reviews

I worked at Kitchell full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Organized, efficient. Generally enjoyable and friendly environment. Subcontractor "list" is high quality. Open to new thoughts, processes. Promote continued education, where applicable.

    Cons

Slow to promote. A lot of time commitment. High performance expectations, sometimes unrealistic expectations. No bonus plan, in my experience, though may exist in other positions.

    Advice to Management

    Pay seems a bit low.

I have been working at Kitchell full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Employee ownership is good if they can get me to retirement. The average person not making $150k/yr. are hardworking and dedicated. The benefits are good, profit sharing, generous PTO.

    Cons

Kitchell was the company to work for and the company to have build for you 15 years ago. It's a shell of its former glory with run down offices and 10-years behind in technology. It's embarrassing how many times I get asked "Man, what happened to your guys?" They've brought in a BUNCH of high dollar new people that aren't adding any value and don't respect the culture. The C level guys are a bunch of shells pumping ample up the employees with a false stock value. I've got to hold on a few more years, hopefully the house of cards doesn't collapse. We have landed "some" work recently but it's not anywhere near what it used to be. DPR, Hunt, McCarthy, Sundt are eating out lunch and laughing at us.

    Advice to Management

Get lean, you know those core values.....read them. Be honest and value the people that got you there, our lives are invested in this company and we're all NERVOUS!

I have been working at Kitchell full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great employee owned company. Kitchell definitely takes care of it's employees to the best of their ability.

    Cons

You must be willing to move at the end of project. There aren't enough local projects to continue employment unless you are willing to move.

    Pros

I was given a ton of job experiences...a lot of variety...and even if I got stuck on a boring task for a month or so, it usually changed relatively quickly, so I was able to always learn something new. The ViCon (virtual construction) team is generally very open to new ideas and trying new things. Also, upper management is extremely accessible to everyone and usually listens to what you have to say.

    Cons

Outside of the ViCon group, the company is a bit more "old-school" and takes longer to adopt new ideas. Also, they company is a regional powerhouse (AZ, NM, TX) but has trouble on a national scale competing against the likes of McCarthy, DPR, etc.. who are enormous and have greater financial resources. Going after big jobs, it sometimes feels like David and Goliath

    Advice to Management

Invest in technology to help your employees work smarter, not harder. A lot of man hours were wasted on my jobsite wrestling with cumbersome, archaic software that needed to be redone or thrown out altogether.

I worked at Kitchell full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Big company, but small enough to know almost everyone. Loved the staff and opportunities. Made many connections by networking and helping as much as I was capable of.

    Cons

High turnover in management. Many managers transferred to and from the area frequently. Had to help train management to get them on board, but wasn't too bad.

    Advice to Management

Kitchell treats their employees well and offer great opportunities for interns. Randy Rominger is a great executive.

    Very progressive in the industry.

    Cons

If you're not one of the long time in-crowd, consider yourself on the bubble. A lot of arrogance.
