Consulting Exit Opportunities

Product Associate

Hi everyone, Got a few offers that I would love some input on. Have offers from Visa, PayPal, Affirm, and Wisetack (series B start-up). Visa is in office while the other three are remote friendly, which is important to me. Visa comp is also about 30k lower than the other offers (tc from the other three companies are at around170, yoe 2.5). Normally I’d go with Wisetack or Affirm for the growth potential but given what happened to Klarna, I’m a bit hesitant. Which option would you go with

    Excelent environment and very dynamic

Klarna is a large company but still manages to remain dynamic and forward thinking. The teams operate with a lot of autonomy and ownership, and the backing of a big company. The engineering culture tries really hard to make things better and overcome the weight of it's tech debt.

Things change constantly and it gets rushed now and then, which might lead to some high pressure moments; no overtime work is expected though, people still work their hours and go home, but those working hours are intense. It is still a bank, meaning care for security and regulations can bog things down sometimes. Also there are the usual pains of companies that grew too fast, certain parts of the structure got submerged under changes and rediscovering them can be hard.

Nice workplace with good coffee, free breakfast, nice perks, daily fruit, events and mostly friendly colleagues. The diversity that comes from having people hired from the bigger part of Europe is great and it was always a blast learning about how people from different countries thought about moving to Sweden. Most employees has a Klarna mindset which makes them friendly, service minded and great to work with.

The backside of being a rather young company but with some employees who has been there since basically the inception is that it creates an invisible hierarchy that outside people can't penetrate. The guy or girl who's been in the team the longest might get a promotion even if they're the least experienced. This goes all the way to the top where you have people in management with very little prior experience of running a company of this scale, they just grew into the position. Removing home grown people and replacing them with external ones should be a priority even if that hurts the egos of those being replaced. I would say that managers and management are the biggest problem at Klarna. You get people who are by no means manager material promoted into managers and then people leave. No one ever acknowledges the problem but just talk about 'normal turnover rate' which makes even more people angry and then they leave too. Aside from the management the politics inside the company is also super weird. If someone opposes Sebastian or someone else on that level they could be asked to leave the company the same day. Klarna is losing a lot of good people all the time because of the bad management and the politics but they don't seem to care about it. The culture is for the most part really great and this makes it's even sadder to see how they sometime treat people. Salaries are not great but not bad either, that's not the reason so many people are leaving for other fintech companies or music streaming companies with free soda. There's been a lot of talk about the office itself which is a nice office but with really bad layout. The noise level can be really bad at times but instead of acknowledging this management just says that people shouldn't complain. There are so many promises about the office that never materialized so after a while you just stop listening.
