I have been working at Kmart part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Flexible schedule and pretty nice coworkers.

    Cons

My two-star rating was me being nice. This company is horribly, terribly unorganized. I'm not sure if it is because of the amount of closings that Kmart has done, or if that's just how the business is. I started not too long ago, and if I didn't need the money or work experience, then I would have quit. The training process is horrible. They stick you in front of a screen (two four-hour shifts for me) and show you boring/old videos. Some of the videos are outdated (re: coupons from what I've noticed), and the rest of it is reading documents. After you do that, they have you stand over an employee's shoulder and watch what they're doing at the register (which doesn't help very much) and then toss you on a register by yourself. The instructional videos don't teach you how to use the register very well, only giving you the basics (tenders, voids, SYW tender, etc). Training should have actual transaction simulations, but I'm not surprised that it doesn't because this company seems to avoid spending more money than they absolutely HAVE to. The store I'm in has broken registers, broken plastic bag holders, etc. It's unprofessional and unsightly. It's not my company, though. The pay is pretty much garbage (minimum wage), too. I was speaking to a coworker during my training, and she told me 'good luck'. I can now see why she was trying to warn me. The software on the register systems is COMPLETELY outdated. They don't upgrade them. From what I've been reading, they just keep on adding more and more bloatware instead of using a newer, better software. So, parroting the girl who warned me from taking the job, good luck. If you can get something better, please do. Stay away from this place with a 100 foot pole.

    Advice to Management

Get it together and for goodness sake, put some money into the few stores you have remaining.

I worked at Kmart full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You can enjoy a relative degree of independence at your store location, volume-to-tech ratio will vary widely depending on region and demographics.

    Cons

Technology is reasonable though reliance on the dated pdx system does not do any favors for the workflow. Tech hours are generally limited and the company is not financially healthy (should not be a secret to anyone on that note); this has led to a transition towards an increasingly hostile work culture which has worsened as more Kmart pharmacy locations close down. Enormous pressure on all pharmacists and metric goals are extremely difficult to reach at best (e.g. an expectation to spend 15 minutes an hour outside the pharmacy engaging customers on the retail floor regardless of the situation in the pharmacy itself).

    Advice to Management

Most pharmacists working for the company have their entire day budgeted to handling patient volume and third party insurance concerns; adopting a business model that expects them to adopt additional responsibilities is not likely to be a healthy approach.

I have been working at Kmart part-time

    Pros

Customers, coworkers, cashiering easy. That's it.

    Cons

Paid WAY too little, just over min wage for being a supervisor. I've been a manager before at a different establishment that was a small business and got paid a lot more. I know people who haven't had a raise in 5 years. Not too much motivation to work service desk.

    Advice to Management

Give incentives like raises. Pay more to service desk associates because they're running the front and dealing with all the angry customers. Literally end up running back and forth.
