I have been working at Knewton full-time

    Pros

Great culture and great people. Challenging problems and inspiring mission. Happy hours. Pet friendly. Free lunch, dinner, and metro card. All the start up perks + doing important work.

    Cons

The company is growing quickly so global offices can feel disconnected. No matching 401K, but that seems like it is coming soon.

    Advice to Management

Stay more connected with your employees. Give employees the opportunity to work closely with the students/partners we serve.

I worked at Knewton full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Knewton has a spectacular community of nice people who are genuinely interested in education. In addition to this, Knewton has a cutting-edge technology platform that is leaps and bounds ahead of any other adaptive education system. I believe that it is rare to find such a combination.

    Cons

I think that most software engineers at least could make more money at other companies in New York.

    Advice to Management

Work on the consistency of your internal messaging.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Knewton full-time

    Pros

Existing business partners so more focus can be spent on solving problems and products that people are really actively using at the moment. Probably some of the more exciting/ challenging problems you can come by as a data scientist. Great culture and atmosphere. We like to pride ourselves not just on smart people but really nice and collaborative people as well.

    Cons

The leadership can be a little bit lagging instead of leading in terms of next steps of the company. While some enjoy the decentralized type of work flow, I think that there could be a little more top down guidance for the company goals

    Advice to Management

    See above.

I worked at Knewton (More than a year)

    Pros

Really nice coworkers in general. Interesting and smart people - the best thing about the company. Nice perks - free monthly metrocard and lunches/dinners.

    Cons

Territorial fights on the business side impeded progress and a lot of duplication of effort. Limited guidance from management and scattered pursuit of viable products. Hopefully the new head of product has provided some focus as I still think the idea and goals are laudable.

    Advice to Management

Focus on launching (!) products that are commercially viable. Clearer selineation of responsibilities of the business groups.

I worked at Knewton full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The product has potential and the company has a great mission. You work with smart people. The environment is laid backed and casual.

    Cons

Leadership is lacking, which results in chaotic product development cycles. Not everyone is heard when they speak, so there is a culture of alienation or not belonging. You feel lost most of the time if you are not a developer. Also the company is not creating anything innovative or new. They are just recycling and building products that already exist out in the market.

    Advice to Management

There is chaos and no defined plans for the company and product lines. There seems to be a rush to release products with little or no planning.

    Pros

Delicious lunch in the office every day. Tasty cold brew most days. Fully stocked fridge with berries and iced tea.

    Cons

too many white males with beards. Not enough cross-team collaboration. Some teams were not very smart or efficient; most people were nice and brilliant but some were crazy and unimpressive.

    Advice to Management

Hire more diverse employees and fire people who negatively impact the work of others even if they're getting there own work done. Also, be less intimidating and more transparent.

    Pros

Knewton is full really bright and fun people who are working together to bring personalized education to the world. It is a great work environment with a lot of potential to learn new things and build a career.

    Cons

Sometimes projects get descoped without warning, which can be frustrating when you've put a lot into something. No 401-k contribution.

    Advice to Management

Keep working hard to make a better education available to everyone.

    Pros

Great People, Great Engineers to work with. I can speak to the engineering managers for platform and recommendations team being good. The company financial health is OK. They are not the highly funded(as far as absolute numbers go) but they are well funded enough to pull their weight. Great data science team; Lots of good work here if you are interested. The company's core business use case(recommendations to students based on assessments alone) provides very unique and good engineering challenges.

    Cons

Salary and compensation benefits need a revision. Over engineering solutions: Thought they have gotten better at this. Its still a problem. Very different appraisal norms across teams. Messaging to the outside world about our objectives could be better.
