I have been working at Knife River full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Some qualified people to work with. A lot of people with hopes of getting ahead. Can't say much else. Not top tier in anything

    Cons

Hq in Bismarck is out of touch with what it takes to be successful in Construction. They are very anti technology and won't hire enough people to support the internal structure they have. They espouse all sorts of integrity and honesty for employees but management is not honest with employees.

    Advice to Management

Come to the 21st century in technology!

I have been working at Knife River full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mechanics and crews on asphalt were great people.

    Cons

One you quit or get fired good luck getting your money back from your health insurance Premiums that were paid in. This place is a joke

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the trucking department and hire people that aren't in a click and know what their doing. They've lost a lot of great drivers and good people because of it. They had three amazing female drivers that they treated like crap.

I worked at Knife River part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The pay is almost as good as if you are from Minnesota

    Cons

If you work on a certain crew out of Williston and your not from Minnesota you get treated like crap and they will do everything they can to make and employee feel like crap till that person quits there are to many family members and girl friends of bosses that make working there a pain in the butt but some bosses worked with the big guy in Minnesota so whatever you have to say is a lie because friends come first to management and business is 2nd loose the discrimination

    Advice to Management

Do your job if your buddy from Minnesota is not doing his then get rid of him/them and get people in those positions that are capable of doing they're job instead of texting the wife all day and there bosses should not have they're girlfriend on the same crew

    Pros

The company is part of a larger utility group and therefore can withstand the bumps of an unsteady economy. Some managers are good people.

    Cons

Senior management is completely unaware of the skills and abilities of its own people. They insulate themselves almost completely from what's going on. The new President loathes technology and is one of the few executives in the world that doesn't recognize the importance of technology and sees it only as a way for employees to waste time. He'd rather we all used abaci

    Advice to Management

When making decisions about who to promote and who to RIF, actually talk to employees who work with those people. Make decisions based on merit instead of who your friends are.

I worked at Knife River full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

MDU resources (parent of Knife River) did infuse considerable capital into the financial mix

    Cons

It was a great company when it was privately owned. MDU resources/knife river came in and turned from a great company to work for to a lousy company to work for. Thier initial position was that they would let original company run on it's own and 'just send them the money'. After a while they decided they weren't getting enough money and started to micro-manage the company. I won't say that it is now a great company to work for but it is certainly great not to be associated with Knife River/MDU resources.

I worked at Knife River full-time

    Pros

Always looking for people to work for them

    Cons

Did not allow for proper learning time of a new position

    Advice to Management

I liked most of the people I worked with they always said good morning but in the end I didn't get what I needed and that was support

I worked at Knife River (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people to work with. Sales management from other offices spent a great deal of time assisting to build sales.

    Cons

Not always upfront with employees. Was told late in my employment that our division would be sold off and that current office employees would have the opportunity to transfer within or offered a position with the new buyer. Unfortunately, this did not happen in all cases.

    Advice to Management

Show integrity and ethics. My employment ended due to a corporate buyout of my division. Previous to area being sold out, all employees were told that we would either be retained and transferred or given a position with the new employer. Unfortunately, this did not happen in all cases.
