I have been working at Knife River as an intern

    Pros

Will give you all the hours you need during the summer months.

    Cons

Moving around from crew to crew can be rough because you never get in the groove with one group of people

I worked at Knife River full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

great company with great people. We had a shared goal to make it a success in a new operation. Some of the best people I've ever worked with. Very good benefits. Enjoyed my time there. Have man friends from the experience.

    Cons

Pretty hard to have a work life balance. Work is demanding of your time due to the short working season.

    Advice to Management

Keep on going strong, Thanks for being aware of the needs of the people, and doing what you can for them.

    Pros

Flexible work schedule. Good benefits: 401K (matched), health and dental. Coworkers were pleasant to work with. Decent pay (when wages were not frozen). Luckily, I had an amazing onsite manger and supervisor.

    Cons

Continuous change: Company structure and standard operating procedures were constantly changing during my time with the company. Shift changes were common, which made it difficult to settle into a stable work/life balance. Job security was an issue during "the downturn" years; multiple rounds of layoffs was a huge stressor.

    Advice to Management

After all the issues related to the economic crisis, it appears the company (at least the division I worked in) are on an uptick finally. Many senior management positions needed to be looked at closely (which is evident, as a majority of them were either eliminated, or restructured through parent affiliates). Best of luck to those remaining.

I worked at Knife River full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The people I worked with were generally great to be around. The lab was clean and well-maintained. Safety was of the highest priority.

    Cons

The hours were long. I worked 10-hour days, and was still often the first one to leave for the day.

    Pros

Fun place to work with pretty good pay especially if able to work on overtime. Good benefits and a big company to work for.

    Cons

Work is dependent upon the construction economy and therefore unstable and job security can be at risk when business is slow.

    Advice to Management

Notify and educate employees about oportunities for professional development and possibilities with moving up in the company and promotions/ work expectations

    Pros

If you want to make money as a hourly employee, this is a great company. The pay scale is very bottom heavy. It takes a few promotions to make as much as you would as an hourly employee. If you work hard and are competant, there will be opportunity for you to advance. The company is increasingly concerned about safety which is a good thing.

    Cons

like many other companies in the industry, somehow a few idiots have managed to be promoted to a point of incompetency. Summers will be very long hours and little chance of getting time off.

    Advice to Management

Affirm the blue collar guys often. If they feel appreciated, they will work harder.
