    Disapproves of CEO

I worked at Knight Piésold Consulting full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There a few good people but they are over powered by bad senior management.

    Cons

This company has made some bad decisions when it comes to engineering. I am currently with another company fixing their failing dams internationally. Word of the wise to young engineers, associate yourself with competent and good companies. This company gives ridiculous exams in their interview process but seem to fail in the basic engineering principles in actual work, pretty hypocritical.

    Advice to Management

Do good work and stop getting sued, I regret working for your company.

I have been working at Knight Piésold Consulting full-time

    Pros

    - Unbeatable opportunities for young engineers. As part of a small team you will never blend into the woodwork. Respect and responsibility from day 1. Knight Piesold allows you to mold your career path and try your hand at lots of different things.
    - Travel and international exposure. Knight Piesold is an international company and employees often travel. Field assignments boast some increase in pay and opportunity to travel on paid R&R.
    - Management is generally approachable and understanding. Supervisors manage small groups and work hard to develop the engineers in their group.

    Cons

    - Since the team is small and the work is driven by landmarks, it is easy to get overwhelmed. Some overtime should be expected on occasion.
    - On the job training can be hard to come by. Are you good at figuring things out on your own? Good!

    Advice to Management

Provide incentive for overtime whether billable or not.

I have been working at Knight Piésold Consulting full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

-Open communication is encouraged amongst staff members.
-Unique and groundbreaking projects (eg: modified centerline earth dams)
-There is an emphasis on customer satisfaction which encourages a consciously efficient work environment.
-Expanding and diversifying the currently mining-focused company to include more alternative energy, reclamation, and general construction management.

    Cons

-Occasional confusion amongst management due to a large employee expansion within the last couple years.
-When there is a lot of work, work-life balance is severely affected

    Advice to Management

Continue to communicate with and maintain relationships with all employees despite rapidly growing number of personnel.

Friendly, smart people, stream line processes

    Cons

    Pros

Pay is better than average--unfortunately this is an extrinsic motivator--and will not keep employees satisfied forever.

    Cons

Management lacks knowledge of organizational behavior

    Advice to Management

Spend time focusing on organizational behavior--address intrinsic motivators, attitudes, behaviors, and perceptions. Encourage management to develop leadership skills, not just technical skills. Foster an environment of employee empowerment and job satisfaction.

    Pros

bonuses, staff, benefits, chance to travel, location of office, staff outtings

    Cons

too much travel, they cancelled my vacation as they needed someone who could work in the field as part of a team of two. Two days into the field trip my colleague quit and they easily replaced them with someone else.

    Pros

Decent benefits, and the staff functions are awesome.

Lots of field experience for junior staff just starting out

There are some very good senior staff there, if you're lucky enough to work with one. Otherwise. Read on.

    Cons

This list is significantly longer than the pros, so pay attention. Short summary: old school culture resilient to change and an employee first attitude. A little bit toxic depending on what area of the company you get stuck in.

Salary: you will notice your offer is low but you'll be told about the compensation from your bonus which will make up for it. Yes, they will give you a range which is based mostly on their field staff who work 12-13 hours a day or more for months at a time. IE: their bonus might be 15-20k but they have spent 200 days in the field doing 12 hours a day. Do the math and figure out what kind of hourly wage that is...

Career advancement: pretty much every new staff gets thrown on a drill rig regardless of education for months at a time with small breaks in between. Good experience if you're a young geo. note: more than a few good engineers have left the occupation after being burnt up by this company from this.

Field time: standard rotation is 3 weeks on and one week back in the office. You accumulate days in lieu for the weekends worked. Common experience is for you to be 3 weeks in and have then extend it by 2-4 weeks on you, with notice if you're lucky.

Project managers: some good. Some bad.

Culture of discipline: seems like a good way to absolve senior managements responsibility to educate, mentor, and train staff.

    Advice to Management

Happy cows make better milk. Get with the times and start treating your staff like people.

Here are things your competing job market offers:
    Flex time
    Working from home
    35 or a 37.5 hour work week.
    Field uplifts
    Bankable overtime
    3 weeks vacation to start
    Reasonable base pay.

    Pros

KP goes after smaller design jobs; therefore you gain experience fairly quickly.

    Cons

Lots of travel without time to smell the coffee.

    Advice to Management

Plan travel for the mutual benefit of client and engineer.

    Pros

Great people and it was nice to be a part of a great team. There were also lots of activities outside of work to foster greater camaraderie.

    Cons

Be prepared to be driven hard to perform. Could be high stress for some.

    Advice to Management

Please don't promise anything to staff that you cannot deliver. It is very demotivating.
