I worked at Knoxville Utilities full-time

    Pros

Very nice people, awesome benefits, job security, opportunities to move around to different functional areas, well respected in Knoxville

    Cons

Pace of work can be slow, pay is not competitive. These are typical complaints working in government in general. The upside is that both cons mean that the organization is prudent, which is good for customers.

    Advice to Management

Consider new ways for retaining young talent. Otherwise, it's a great place to work with solid people. Great company - Knoxville is lucky to have KUB.

I worked at Knoxville Utilities full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Get to interact with a lot of people in different departments.
Get to learn about different areas in the company.
    Good health insurance.
    Good amount of PTO.

    Cons

    Very political.
If managers don't like you they will push you out.
    No trust amongst coworkers
    Little effective communication between departments
Lack of promotions, average time for promotion is 8-12 years.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees at all levels. People don't trust each other and high turnover in some departments.

I have been working at Knoxville Utilities full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company cares and invests in the development of their employees, available training and leadership training opportunities. Good work Life balance. Good benefits and health care plan.

    Cons

Limited opportunities for growth in engineering. Too conservative for doing business with.

Multiple management changes brings different ideas and priorities, needs to keep management in their departments longer and bring more young people on board

little appreciation for innovation, needs to invest a lot in some of their facilities.

compensations can be improved to be more competitive.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees suggestions, improve aging facilities, some employees give more and deserve more, some underperforming employees take advantage of the organization and need to be let go.

I have been working at Knoxville Utilities part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The pay is good and they are sort of willing to work with your schedule. The people were friendly but they expected a lot out of an intern who was not looking to stay long term.

    Cons

This is somewhere I would never want to work long term. Everyone talked badly about the company, coworkers, and management. Sometimes I would have nothing to do or somedays I would have so much that I couldn't finish in time. There was no balance. They also gave me tasks completely unrelated to my job and department. I was stretched thin and sometimes was working for others teams more than my own. They stressed that the culture was "conservative" but only some employees followed this where in my team I felt like I had to dress like an old lady; I totally understand being professional, but sometimes I got bad looks if I wore any color besides a neutral. Students can also only work up to 29 hours a week which was weird to me where I was always able to work full time in the summer at past jobs. I half enjoyed my experience and it could've been worse.

I worked at Knoxville Utilities full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some talented and dedicated employees, above average compensation for a majority of positions, Tuition assistance for employees.

    Cons

If you are happy with your career path plans, and want to continue acquiring experience in that position, this may not be "the place". At KUB, the company is your career. May be a good placement for someone who is good at internal politics, since it is very clique driven. Promotions are determined by who you know far more often than your qualifications.

I worked at Knoxville Utilities full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Stable, good benefits, freedom to go after topics of interest, and rarely expected to work over the standard 40 hours. Good place to learn skills and develop solid work ethic.

    Cons

Good place to learn skills, but terrible place for career advancement. Advancement is very slow and primarily based on years of service and number of people managed. Very little work culture and management is generally uptight due to public-facing nature of company.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees who make a difference, and work on shattering the glass ceiling. Bring in more young talent to pick up the slack as the baby boomers continue retiring.
