I worked at Kollmorgen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great place to learn if you are willing to raise your hand and volunteer.
    Decent Pay
Great People, very family atmosphere with occasional picnics and bbqs
Nice facility with AC in the factory (unheard of!)

    Cons

There are a few managers with a cutthroat, political attitude but they are few and far between, if you don't get stuck in a division with one (or managed by one) you will be fine.

Be ready to leave to get a raise or promotion - they won't recognize folks who have improved themselves internally until they leave and are needed back.

Some underlying negativity at all levels - it doesn't come from any one place, some is disgruntled older workers, some is brad new hires but there are just a few bad apples there - stay away from them! It is a good place to work but to hear them tell it the sky is falling but it isn't (i think a few of them wrote reviews on here!) Listening to them re-hash every little problem is the biggest con on this list.

    Advice to Management

Get rid of a few self-serving managers and a few negative-nellys lurking in the woodwork and you've got an A+ company

I worked at Kollmorgen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Those less upper-management are amazing people, very much the family. These people have led me to stay as long as I did. Great benefits and pay. I have learned much about DBS; however, too much DBS at Kollmorgen does not make sense.

    Cons

Politically motivated upper management. Cut-throat, over-worked as too lean. Upper management very unapproachable as there is zero trust between OPS and them.

    Advice to Management

Speak to ALL employees, get to know them personally. Ask what motivates one to stay BEFORE they look elsewhere and consequently leave. As stated with those who have left, "the grass is not always greener"... They need to reflect on why people are looking for greener grass. Trust your staff and it leaders in place, not just "managers". Leaders at Kollmorgen are too few, managers who don't lead are plentiful.

I have been working at Kollmorgen full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

We have good work teams that work great together and take ownership of the work that they do and care.

    Cons

Too much micromanaging by sub plant manager. Does not let operations do the jobs they were hired to do.

    Advice to Management

Move sub plant manager out.... Moral is bad.

I have been working at Kollmorgen full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Pay and benefits are above average for the area. Good Engineering team and laid back atmosphere which helps promote work life balance.

    Cons

Upper management is located in their own separate office area away from the general public with doors always shut. Would be nice to interact with them and to share ideas.

    Advice to Management

Make promotions fair and allow competition with the people that kiss "butt:"

I worked at Kollmorgen full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the customer service area, Danaher Motion and enjoyed it while I was there. It is a large customer service center that assists companies in purchasing industrial parts. Employees need to learn four different computer operating systems and a large stack of parts catalogs. The management does try to do things to encourage a sense of teamwork and community among the employees. The overall work environment is a good one. I enjoyed my time there and learned a lot about the industry.

    Cons

They seem to cycle through hiring a group of employees and then do layoffs and then a few months later hire again. They also seem to do this without regard to the employees being let go. I know of one man who worked in the factory for over 17 years who had a family and young children and he was let go three weeks before Christmas without any warning. So they don't seem to have a "heart" for their employees. They seem to hire and layoff frequently.

    Advice to Management

I would recommend having more areas of specialized customer service regarding the parts being ordered than having employees needing to know stacks and stacks of catalog parts and different systems to enter the parts.

    I worked at Kollmorgen full-time

    Pros

Great Co-workers. Depending on which department and location you work for there can be advancement.

    Cons

Senior Management is out of touch with the employee base. They are more concerned with making the numbers each month than with the actual day to day work of their employees. They talk a good game, little to no follow through. It's management by check list rather than real concern for the people doing the work.

    Advice to Management

The managers at staff level need to get out of the office and spend real time on the floor, in a work cell, with the engineers, at remote sites. The focus needs to be more inward that outward towards the parent company. There needs to real use of the tools not just have a Kaizen one week and go back to regular standard work the next. Make it work for the employees instead of against them.
