    Negative Outlook

I worked at Kongsberg Maritime full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

The atmosphere was not like any other that I had ever experienced. The fact that the company was as large as it was and still held that "family atmosphere" made the decisions to go to work everyday an easy one.

    Cons

The majority of the management is somewhat incompetent. I don't believe that any of them had ever really managed people before.

    Advice to Management

Seek some additional training on how to interact with your employees, and remember that if you take care of your employees, they will take care of you.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at Kongsberg Maritime full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Excellent benefits
    -Flexible for additional time off
    -Decent hourly compensation

    Cons

    -Long hours
    -Last minute travel

Current industry outlook does not look very good in the short term. Also, there is the likely event that another downturn can cause the same issues in the company again later.

Lack of long term promotional opportunities.

    Advice to Management

Company needs to be more proactive in order to survive another down turn. Also the management treats the traveling engineers, the life blood of the company, as disposable units and this needs to be changed in order to improve the company's work.

    Pros

Great when times are great in the industry. Used to be a great place to work and great people to be around.

    Cons

Cycle industry. Kongsberg spends money like they print it in the back room when times are good. This could have been better used to have more cash for when times are bad.

    Advice to Management

Be concerned that this website is the only place to get feedback. Make better decisions for the long term for everyone.

    Pros

Good pay! Some of the highest pay for most positions in the industry.
EXECLLENT benefits!!!! The best benefits people have ever heard of!
Cool people from all over the world work there.
Extremely laid back environment, but to a fault... unfortunately...

    Cons

NEPOTISM IS RAMPANT!!!!!!! Always has and always will after what recently happened...

Everyone knew that one certain person would get the recent promotion. Well even though they nixed the official title of the position and called it something else he still got what he wanted and took his boy to the top with him. Everyone is ticked.

Everyone now knows they were lied to and that their voices do not matter! Apparently the main office has their hands so far in this office that this business units leader is even powerless and simply a puppet.

HR's hands are tied due to the above nepotism... The clique seems to get their way due to the main office's involvement. They win all the time. People feel sorry for her! They know she's helpless and her hands are tied on multiple personnel issues.

Extremely laid back environment. Hard for them to terminate people due to their laid back attitude. This breeds a management system that rewards slackers and inexperienced workers. Why fire when you can reassign, assign subordinates and start a generation of worthless workers.

Too many young people with no other relevant work experience. This is the only place they've ever worked and they think they know it all... And get promoted because they're tight with the cliques. Nepotism is all...

This place laid off a guy with almost 20 years relevant experience. Most say it's because he would've been a challenger to the recently vacant position. So they got rid of him so he wouldn't have seemed like the most obvious choice. Too bad they can't see that this office needs good, solid work experience in order to lead this office. Makes me feel sorry to still be employed here. There were even ex military candidates that were overlooked. I'm sure those guys could whip this place into shape and cut the fat.

There's one manager that is so incompetent he just gets moved around since his boss is his best friend.

    Advice to Management

CUT THE DEAD WEIGHT. THERE'S LOTS OF IT TOO. FAR TOO TOP HEAVY WITH MORE IN MANAGEMENT ROLES THAN ACTUAL WORKERS...

Demote or fire the top dog and all of his crew.

Bring in new management ALL ACROSS THE BOARD!

Give power back to the leader of this business unit where it belongs. Quit tying his hands...

PUT THE EX MILITARY GUYS INTO MANAGER ROLES. THEY CAN MOTIVATE THE SLACKERS!

I have been working at Kongsberg Maritime full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    -Very laid back atmosphere
    -Interesting and fun work
    -New building with great amenities
    -A ton of travel opportunities

    Cons

This was such an amazing place to work when I first started but now management is letting it go down the drain. The office is now very political and upper management has become very secretive with decisions. Promotions are based off of popularity and who will go along with the status quo instead of who will be best for the job. No one is held accountable for their actions. Instead of disciplining people when they don't do their job, management just institutes new procedures and checklists for everyone so they can avoid confrontation.

    Advice to Management

Hold employees that aren't doing their job accountable instead of avoiding confrontation. Listen to employee's ideas on making things better and more efficient. Morale isn't low because of the market. It's low because we feel like upper management ignores our ideas and opinions. If things don't turn around this office will lose all of it's good talent when the job market improves.

    - People are very easy to get along with
    - Office environment is very laid back

    Cons

    - Work can become redundant and boring

    - No clear paths to differentiate yourself from the pack and ascend faster or in an alternate fashion

GREAT company with potential growth. They reward their employees with nice bonuses.

    Advice to Management

    Offer minorities management jobs.
