    Pros

Quality National Brand products that you can be proud to sell. Leading Brands in Retail. The Company has a genuine care for its people.

    Cons

Being nimble is sometimes at a premium based on the size of the organization. Ability to make decisions at a local level has diminished in recent years.

    Advice to Management

Empower your people and, in turn, hold them accountable to performance.

    Pros

Offers quite a bit of flexibility - flex hours, working remotely and time off. Opportunities to grow across multiple functional areas. It is very realistic to gain experience across multiple areas during your tenure...finance, marketing, sales, systems, etc. It's all "under one roof." Excellent training opportunities and highly qualified management teams to mentor and guide you through your career. People are truly the focus...strong leadership development opportunities, strong management training opportunities and opportunities understand and help run one or many business.

    Cons

Large corporation so networking is critical. You need to make yourself stand-out. As a stand-out, the sky is the limit. No fears, however, mediocrity is also rewarded quite well! This is frustrating to the high potentials, but great for the average achiever!

    Advice to Management

Allow your high potential, developing leaders to soar. Not all rules apply equally to all employees. Some exceptions can be made!
Continue to develop and prmote your philanthropic efforts...you do a lot of good for the community and the community barely knows about it!

    Pros

Relatively small company, but with well-known brands (Ketchup... obviously, but also Ore-Ida, Weight Watchers Smart Ones, Classico Pasta Sauce, just to name a few). Very well respected in the community. And most importantly, great people. They do a great job of picking top talent from other top companies like P&G, Kraft, and General Mills (most companies pluck away the dead weight from these top companies... Heinz is able to lure away some of the good ones).

    Cons

Pittsburgh is a tough town to adjust to. It's a great city for it's size, but most people that live there were born and raised there, so it can be tough to meet folks. Location aside, Heinz still invests very little in marketing support behind its brands as compared to the industry. It varies by brand, but if you're a marketing person, you'll likely do little marketing at Heinz. But you will get some great general management experience. Finally, Heinz is an extremely risk-averse company, testing everything to the Nth degree before making a decision. When a decision is made, it's usually a good one because it's supported with so much data. And you'll get some great research experience if you're involved in that end. But it can get frustrating at times.

    Advice to Management

Support your brands. Even Heinz Ketchup will one day lose relevance without marketing support. And by the time you realized you've lost relevance, it will be difficult to ever get it back.

    Pros

Kraft foods offers good salary levels and great benefits, a supportive work environment, and some great opportunity for advancement. They give you a company car with all expenses paid, and the opportunity to win trips and other things for acheiving sales goals. Good bonus plan and reachable sales goals. Good equipment and data to help with sales presentations. Great people to work with and a good, positive work environment. Kraft is a solid company and the food business is somewhat recession proof.

    Cons

Not as many opportunities unless you are able to relocate. Salaries do not get really high although you can make a good living working for kraft.

    Advice to Management

Provide state of the art sales marterials to the sales staff, provide latest information gathering systems to sales staff. Continue to develop healthy foods across all categories to remain competetive.

    Pros

    1. Developing brands/products people know and love
    2. Peer group is a pool of talented and intelligent professionals
    3. PTO (paid time off) when you start you receive 20 days vacation/sick time; excellent work/life balance
    4. Opportunities for cross-functional rotations

    Cons

Promotions seem to be based on the duration in your position and not your performance level which is extremely frustrating. Also the company heavily weighs "inclusion" which has led to people questioning if the company is "inclusive" or "exclusive". If you are not a "minority" then you won't be championed; you have to survive on your own and figure out your own path.

    Advice to Management

If you want to maintain high talent then reward high talent. Kraft has a tendency to be too HR PC. Show your high performs their efforts can be rewarded.

    Pros

I have had more responsibility in my first 5 years (post-undergrad) than most anyone I know. A person who is results-oriented and displays strong leadership skills will have a successful career and the opportunity to work on highly visible projects.

    Cons

Kraft is a very marketing-driven company. I worked in operations and that can be frustrating since many operation decisions were trumped by marketing.

    Advice to Management

Focus on restoring product quality and identifying cost savings by eliminating inefficiencies across the value chain in order to achieve profitable growth!

    Cons

    Advice to Management

Heinz products are amazing. I hadn't tried ANY of them (except Ketchup) prior to working there. Why? Because they are tremendously under-marketed. Invest in marketing.
