I worked at Kroger full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Peers are great people to work with.

    Cons

Management has been asked to get rid of those older, or more likely to take FML - or are on FML. They get seasonal or lower paid people to replace them.

    Advice to Management

Stick to your convictions. Remember that the front line are people... not machines.

    Pros

If you have a personality, handling customers is never difficult

    Cons

They don't pay enough, especially for all of the work that they have you do in there.

    Advice to Management

    Pay more? Idk

I have been working at Kroger part-time

    Pros

Some of the employees are lovely. The environment is nice and the customers are awesome.

    Cons

Before Kroger, I've never worked anywhere that just walking in the doors sucks the life right out of you. Co-workers are sullen, passive aggressive and outright hostile to each other. Training beyond the training center, which has only about 20% relevancy to any one job position, is non existent. You train by screwing up and getting yelled at.

    Advice to Management

Management is just as sullen and hostile as everyone else. Start practicing what you preach in terms of friendliness. Actually train your employees and get on the same page with all levels of management. If you ask a question of 5 different managers, you get 5 wildly different answers at my store.

I have been working at Kroger full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

You gain a lot of valuable experience in merchandising , human resources, and operations; which in turn makes you a more marketable candidate for any future endeavors.

    Cons

No type of work/life balance, will change your already crazy schedule with little to no notice. They are always chancing the next thing and adding more responsibilities to management and department leadership without perfecting what's already on the agenda.

    Advice to Management

Please stop bombarding store and department leadership with a million and one smalls tasks. start asking yourself is this something you would like to do everyday before making the decisions to have others doing it, like working hectic schedules (1-11pm shift and then having to come back in the next day at 7am).

I worked at Kroger part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Amazing people, Great lunch break

    Cons

Scheduling was a hassle, if younger than 50 plan to have no free wknds

    Advice to Management

Understand that young people also have lives and that most older people there are there because they are retired.

I have been working at Kroger (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, competitive pay, quarterly bonuses

    Cons

Management is very critical, stingy with praise. They also play favorites and don't apply the same rules and standards to everyone. They communicate very poorly and reprimand for things that were not communicated clearly.

    Advice to Management

Praise your employees when they shine, coach them when they miss the mark. Yelling at someone to smile more and be friendly is not going to make them smile and be friendly, it's going to scare and upset them. Scared anxious employees are not good employees.

I have been working at Kroger full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Kroger is a company that's been around for over 100 years , solid company not going to close or sell out anytime soon.

    Cons

Used to be a awesome company to work for , but over the years we have been slowing losing what was great for instance , great starting pay that was ahead of other grocery company's, now we are at the bottom of other grocery retailers paying less then most. After years of being there you get a whole 25 cent raise every year , our benefit package is almost done to nothing , after years of having spouse insurance coverage , that is gone. Also now we are not aloud to have more than 80% of our 401k in company stock , and much more.

    Advice to Management

Don't beat on your best people by always telling us no overtime , then the next day ask us to work overtime . It gets to the point we don't want it at all no matter how bad the store looks because of lack of help.

I worked at Kroger full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very solid company financially! Still growing market share here and nationwide and acquiring other franchises nationally. Will be around for a long time! Sharing success offers hourly employees an hourly bonus 4 times per year

    Cons

Real management experience doesn't get recognized. So, starting salary is low. 50 hour work week minimum! Often times finds newer managers are glorified stock people. Great teammates

    Advice to Management

Realize the quality and experience you already have!

I worked at Kroger full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

I loved the people I worked with and the Customers were great.

    Cons

Scheduling, lack of communication, playing to the "favorites",

    Advice to Management

You need to hear both sides before deciding what to do. When someone comes to complain to you about what someone else did then you should listen to both sides. Don't just take the side of the person who is complaining. Also, When someone asks to go down to one day a week Whatever manager agreed to it. Stop take that person to the office and have then fill out whatever form or have them write something out right then and there.
