I worked at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I wish I could say there were pros in working for this company.. The best one I can think of is that I don't work there anymore..

    Cons

The company is stymied by bad decision making and predatory investment policies that they fail to live up to their core value statements. People Do not Matter. Long hours, sacrifices in time and energy - no recognition or rewards for high performing individuals. This company is severely out of touch with the voice of its employees, despite their attempts to unite the corporate culture with their "VOICE of KNS" surveys. No Work Life Balance, No Respect from upper management. Constant Restructuring announcements and reductions in force. Rarely do women get promoted to upper management levels. Significantly underpaid for the job title held.

    Advice to Management

Core Value: People Matter is an absolute farse. Do not sell your employees a bill of goods that is based on lies.

"Henry Ford would have done a better job running Rolls Royce than KNS has done running Orthodyne Electronics"

I worked at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I was hired on to work for Orthodyne Electronics in Irvine before they were bought out by KNS and the atmosphere then was great. A number of the people are still there and they are great people to work with. I enjoyed the OE people far more than I enjoyed the KNS people.

    Cons

KNS makes thousands of identical machines and doesn't care about customer service. They dominate their market by mass producing thousands of identical machines and thought they could "improve" OE by applying their techniques to a company that produces dozens of highly customized machines.

Henry Ford said you could get a Model T in any color you wanted as long as it was black. He made thousands of identical cars and people bought them. People also bought Rolls Royces though and they were made with the customer in mind. High performance, numerous options, great customer service...more than one color.

Orthodyne Electronics was the GOLD STANDARD in Wedge Bonding because of their top quality equipment and outstanding customer support. Under KNS the quality standards are non-existent and the customer no longer matters after the check has cleared.

It's a real shame what they've done to the once proud Orthodyne Electronics.

    Advice to Management

My advice to KNS management is to pull your heads out of your butts and realize that your way isn't the right way to run OE. They were the world leader in their field without you and they're on the verge of collapse under your rule. Have you ever heard the phrase "don't mess with a good thing." You messed with it; you're killing a once great company under the guise of synergy and efficiency...neither of which you are achieving.

I have been working at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Innovative technology. Some highly skilled technical staff remains though probably not for long.

    Cons

ZERO corporate culture. Poor morale. Decision making based on bottom line estimates that lack any kind of foresight, crippling the potential for future innovation and competitiveness. An inanimate CEO who cares only about increasing share prices in the short term instead of growing the company in a healthy and strategic manner. No younger generation of engineers (they're usually the first to get laid off).

    Advice to Management

Actively participate with employees in the decision making process to earn trust. Be more transparent and upfront. Show strong leadership and be more decisive on every day decisions. Stop micro-managing, let middle management and task leaders do there jobs.

"Poor Management in SG Took A Winner And Turned It Into A Loser"

I worked at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people in the Southern California location.
Great legacy products (Orthodyne wedge bonders)
    High-tech robotic systems
Fair severance package for those laid off
A loyal, good (yet shrinking) customer base

    Cons

Upper management at this site does not push back against a finance-centric corporate HQ in order to justify the local wedge-bond-specific business model and needs. Instead, the SoCal site is driven into the ground by number-crunchers who are thinking liquidation of the whole Irvine site will be more beneficial than injecting R&D and new product funding.

The specter of being laid off hangs like a dark cloud over the facility since the K&S takeover. There are massive waves of layoffs (retrenchment) and you never know when you are going to be next. ZERO job security. Rest assured, though, when they lay you off, they may call you back to be a TEMP with no benefits!

The quarterly bonus provided by the company is good money for the employees, but forces you to focus on your own projects instead of helping your colleagues. Does not foster teamwork in the workplace. Many individuals, no team effort - unless it puts money in my pocket at the same time.

Customers are a lower priority than shareholders.

Travel policy is ludicrous with the company taking weeks to pay back employees after a business trip. Employees in the USA are forced to use their personal credit cards for business travel.

The CEO earns at least $5 million per year. Why doesn't he take a 10% pay cut and save 5 to 8 jobs in Irvine that were alleviated "not because of performance, but instead due to business climate." I was willing to take a personal 10% pay cut to save others jobs during previous waves of K&S layoffs.

"People matter" is a core value of the company, yet the truth is that to K&S, people do not matter.

    Advice to Management

To the Singapore management team: Let the wedge bonder unit do what they do best and do not interfere. Should have left Orthodyne's business model alone, as it was not similar to the K&S business model.
To the Irvine local management team: Stand your ground against the top-level corporate management and lobby on behalf of your customers, products and employees. A ball bonder salesman is not going to want to sell wedge bonders - harder to sell and requires a much more complex level of knowledge of the machine/industry/applications.

    Pros

Only pay above average; paid above market.

    Cons

Purchasing department full of politics and beware of old guards. A lot of lady bosses difficult to serve under them. indecisive and no direction. Fire fighting.

    Advice to Management

    Revamp the whole purchasing department.

I worked at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Solid products, very capable in process knowledge. Core product ( Wirebonder) is still the market leader. Lots of investment in new product development.

    Cons

No benefits for engineers, executives take all the credits.
Slow development cycle, competitors has developed better and cheaper bonders while K&S is standing still.
Spent lots of money on advanced bonding machine development but no customer willing to buy it.

    Advice to Management

Please share more profits to who actually doing the hard work and do not just pay the managers who just talking and create no value to the company. Please promote people at the right time not just wait until they feel frustrated and start to look for a new job.

    Pros

Good learning stage to polish your technical skill.

    Cons

Poor management planning, no corporate direction, not worth spending your time here due to strong politic, the worst case is company management drive the project through blaming cultural....

    Advice to Management

Try to change the cultural from blaming to encouraging. As an engineer, we should always ask how when we take to people in order to learn and we should only ask why when we talk to ourself.

    Cons

Very common in laying-off employees and shut down plants. The last plant being shutdown was in Malaysia. Reason given was completely unaccepted and non-logical.

    Advice to Management

Do not talk differently to any employees within the organization worldwide. We do communicate to each either.

    Cons

Meritocracy is in the dust bin. Silly people can climb up without any contribution. Recruitment and promotion is a farce. Preferred people only are given opportunities.

Please don't take away employee benefits to increase the company bottom line. Please adhere to equal opportunity.

    Pros

    Work and life balance.
    Good salary with some benefits.

    Cons

Do not expect for a long term career as you may be surprised that tomorrow is your last day. Retrenchments, downsizing and shutdown are too frequent. If there is a new office or factory has just setup, extended or renovated recently, it might just disappear after a short period of time.

    Advice to Management

Please make better plans before making any decisions for hiring, setting up new offices or facilities.
