I worked at Kutztown University part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Many people care about the state of the university. The professors especially seem to care very much about their students' success. And the staff are concerned with keeping the school running smoothly. Most people on campus are friendly, employees and students alike. It's a great community with a beautiful campus, located in a quiet town that is close to anything you might need.

    Cons

There seems to be a significant disconnect between the faculty (professors) and the staff (non-faculty employees), compounded by their membership in two different unions (one for faculty, one for staff) who don't work together when negotiations occur with PASSHE. Often, one group is used against the other in the negotiations process, i.e. "staff accepted decreased medical benefits, so faculty should, too." Sometimes, a staff member and faculty member don't work well together, citing "not in my job description" as a reason to not do a certain, simple task.

    Advice to Management

Faculty leaders should try to work with staff leaders, especially the leaders of the unions and those involved in the negotiations process. Employees should be motivated to help one another out, even for simple tasks or tasks that would be expected of them but aren't necessarily documented.

I worked at Kutztown University full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great collegial environment, solid salary and benefits program, and great location. Not so large that nobody knows you, and people are easy to meet.

    Cons

Lacks a lot of institutional diversity. Many departments/areas are homogenous in their make-up; sometimes leads to group-think.
