I worked at LA Fitness as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free gym membership that allowed me to drop into any of there lovely facilities. This made it possible to fit my own workout in on a tight schedule by giving me the ability to stop at a convenient location depending on the side of town my full-time job had me on.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive for a group fitness instructor position. If you rely on your group fitness earnings there are better paying opportunities. However, if you teach for the love of it, to supplement your income, &/or for a membership to a nice gym with friendly and professional staff, I strongly recommend working here.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time

    Pros

Great people to teach and the club is usually maintained.

    Cons

No breaks, no raises, constant turnover, and communicating with corporate is next to impossible. I requested a pay increase over 8 mos ago and they keep putting it off. Currently seeking new position at another facility. Incredibly disappointed.

    Advice to Management

Compensate those who stay at the company and work hard. Other companies are paying their instructors better and offering time off during the holidays.

    Pros

Great way to meet new people, teach different aspects of fitness that you love, and a free gym membership is never bad :)

    Cons

Sticking to LA fitness formats, music selections, old equipment, etc

    Pros

LA fitness makes it easy to receive your pay and your W-2's are available on ADP for 3 years. You get a lot of down to earth people, not like in some of the other national chains. Always classes to pick up if you want them.

    Cons

Limited equipment and no ability to request to add equipment. Bathrooms are always messy. Zero review of pay unless you ask and don't push continuing education. Management of the gym itself seems to have a lot of turnover.

    Advice to Management

It would be great to have more of a focus on continuing education and building bonds amongst the instructors.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You're only required to teach 2 classes a week, which is lovely if you're just looking for something to keep YOU healthy while making a tiny amount of money to waste on nonsense like gas, or movie tickets, etc... Don't rely on this as income, your paycheck every 2 weeks will be akin to finding forgotten money after doing laundry.

Also, you get free LA Fitness gym membership and bring in a guest as much as you want.

    Cons

Not a lot of money I guess, but you can take off any amount of days as you want (within reason - dont ask for a substitute instructor every single day lol)

    Advice to Management

Don't be so eager to upgrade to the instructor-computer style radio. It might be fancy, but it sucks.

    Pros

You can work at any LA Fitness. Free gym membership

    Cons

Strict corporate policies. No creative freedom as a group exercise instructor. Area group fitness director was rude and unhelpful.

    Advice to Management

Try connecting more with members and staff.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The Group X Coordinator is great, the gym is close to my home and the members make teaching fun and rewarding.

    Cons

Low pay, very "corporate" atmosphere, unfortunately the "corporation" seems to have lost touch with the customer and what they want in a gym. The gym is in need of updating, the carpet is old and the locker rooms a mess.

    Advice to Management

Get in touch with the needs of your members, update the gym and turn the lights down in the cycle room.
