I have been working at LA Fitness part-time

    Pros

Energetic environment. Very easy to pick up classes to substitute as well as request substitutes.

    Cons

Occasionally have equipment issues. Music provided is not great.

    Advice to Management

    Provide better music options.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Members are great - that's the only pro I got!

    Cons

No raises given due to years of experience, time with the company, or dedication to company. Corporate sets ridiculous rules like don't befriend the members, they don't want you making classes any better or different from their required 'format'. No ability to teach outside their required times (5:30, 5:45, 6:45, etc). Only want you to teach using their music either CDs or computer system (which is Power music = horrible). Continuously ask you to sub, and will change up a class format, you show up to teach another format the members aren't expecting and they get furious and walk out. Communication from activities director consists of either calling you and/or texting for subbing but they will rarely return YOUR calls if you need something.

    Advice to Management

Stop with all your corporate rules. Listen to your instructors as THEY are the ones teaching classes, we have good ideas and have a pulse on what the members want. Allow some flexibility in your classes so members can grow, be inspired, and learn more. Show your instructors some respect as well, don't preach your ridiculous rules to us, have a 2-way discussion.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

There is a lot of opportunity to sub classes. Awesome group fitness managers who are very supportive. Great continuing education provided by the company.

    Cons

Low per class pay rate. It is common to have issues with the audio / stereo equipment not working.

    Advice to Management

Myranda is the best - promote her! Pay your instructors a little more competitively and they will stay with the company longer.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    The members are great people!

    Cons

Corporate office is unresponsive to problems. Heater was stuck "on" in the aerobics room all summer. Outdated sound system - instructors not allowed to use iPods! Only CD's. Microphones and speakers are constantly broken. Unwilling to offer new formats of group fitness classes. Trainings offered are only LA Fitness brand. They do not allow an instructor to take their training unless they already teach those type of classes , however they do not hesitate to ask you to sub for them. Zumba instructors are treated like second class citizens. Bathrooms are filthy.

    Advice to Management

    Please update everything.

I worked at LA Fitness part-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I enjoyed my position as a group fitness instructor at LA Fitness because the classes, members, and staff are so diverse that it constantly motivated me and I felt like I never got bored or reached a 'plateau' which is easy to do with workouts.

    Cons

I felt like the classes stayed at the beginner level, even when modifications were made. I understand that LA Fitness is a very large company and new members, guests, etc.

    Advice to Management

I enjoyed working at LA Fitness very much and have mostly positive feedback for management. The reason I left LA Fitness was because the salary was significantly lower than at other clubs.

I worked at LA Fitness as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Free gym membership that allowed me to drop into any of there lovely facilities. This made it possible to fit my own workout in on a tight schedule by giving me the ability to stop at a convenient location depending on the side of town my full-time job had me on.

    Cons

Pay is not competitive for a group fitness instructor position. If you rely on your group fitness earnings there are better paying opportunities. However, if you teach for the love of it, to supplement your income, &/or for a membership to a nice gym with friendly and professional staff, I strongly recommend working here.

I have been working at LA Fitness part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Lots of types of classes to teach and lots of subbing opportunities; you are mostly left alone to do your own thing

    Cons

you can't use your own music (and for some formats there are 2 CD choices)

they treat part-time employees who get paid very little like we should be a slave to the company

management is obsessed with verbage and being "in control" and spends a lot of time correcting how you say things instead of helping you solve real problems; I don't feel comfortable speaking to my boss because she has a problem with everything I do

Expectations for (Activities directors) are super unclear. How to request time off, how to get sick pay, how to deal with strange scenarios is not explained. I wasn't even told what to wear until 6 months in....

Salaries for fitness instructors never increase.

They won't let tattoos show or men wear earrings.... this is 2017

    Advice to Management

Don't treat activities directors like they are 18 with no work experience. Give helpful feedback and set clear expectations
