A bit of political fight among the management; focused on volume more than qualify of work

I worked at LASOC (Less than a year)

    Pros

LASOC works endlessly to provide legal aid to underrepresented communities in a way that maintains individual dignity and promotes awareness and self-sufficiency. The lawyers and employees and volunteer attorneys work tirelessly and are amazingly dedicated. If you are looking for a job with lots of client interaction and direct representation this is the place. Clients are treated very well, despite some occasions where they are one of many all trying to get help by a few attorneys.

    Cons

Micro-management is definitely not a thing here, which can be good, but sometimes it can leave people in over their heads a bit with not enough supervision. It can definitely lead to mixed information given to the client sometimes, but usually any conflicts are resolved. You have be comfortable diving in head-first and not being afraid to ask a lot of questions as they come up.

    Pros

A lot independence for a young law student -- managed own caseload; interviewed owned clients; lots of research opportunities.

    Cons

A non-profit has monetary constraints, so some of the computers were old, but that's not a big deal to me...

I worked at LASOC as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I interned in the Healthcare Consumer Action Unit. I enjoyed the hands on experience. You get to do intake calls, and basically handle a case by yourself with the guidance of your supervising attorney.

    Cons

The computers were a bit old, but still usable.

    Pros

Good benefits and decent pay; great work experience and satisfaction in helping the less privileged.

    Cons

Ceiling on what you can earn; sometimes office politics can get in the way of really enjoying working there.

    Pros

Very good legal set up. Very effective and helpful to low income people who can not afford legal cost for a legal litigation.

    Cons

Needs more people to work here. Too many calls, not enough people to handle it.

    Advice to Management

    Good job.

    Pros

You are able to gain a wide breadth of information in a short time because of the number of clinics.

    Cons

There is not a firm structure for the summer law clerk program. Nevertheless, the exposure was great.

    Advice to Management

I would be great to have more of a summer law clerk program in place. The week long orientation is great, but adding more to the program would be ideal.

I worked at LASOC as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Friendly people to work with. Given decent amount of responsibilities so it was a good learning experience.

    Cons

Seems that they are often short on funding, which is understandable for a non profit, but can cause some obstacles to getting work done.
