I have been working at LaGuardia Community College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you're superiors like you, it's a sweet gig. Light work load except for when the SYEP program starts and ends. Lots of work parties and free food.

    Cons

If they dislike you, they'll certainly let you know. Because clientele is randomly sourced some of them are crazy.

    Advice to Management

Professionalism is not your current mood.

I worked at LaGuardia Community College full-time

    Pros

    - Students are interesting and diverse. LAGCC is one of the most ethnically diverse community colleges in the United States, which makes for a fascinating student body.
    - Some of the staff are incredibly dedicated and hardworking

    Cons

    - Upper management is corrupt and cares more about publicity than about students.
    - Toxic atmosphere among staff. Leadership uses with rudeness and hostility to manage subordinates.
    - College lacks the processes to manage large numbers of high-need students. Students would routinely wait hours to get questions answered or be seen by student services reps

    Advice to Management

This college has a lot of potential but needs a major overhaul. The President is basically the Hillary Clinton of the community college world - smart and experienced, but thinks she's much better-liked / more effective than she actually is. This college spends an enormous amount of money on PR (hence the coverage in the NYT and in national media...it isn't an accident that these outlets chose LAGCC to cover as opposed to other cc's in the area).
There were major issues with upper-level management when I was there, combined with serious salary inequity among staff doing the exact same job. Those in the "in-group" (as in, they were friends with the VP and / or the Dean) got promoted and hired at outrageous salaries for no reason other than nepotism. One of the former VPs (who is now serving as President at a different cc upstate) routinely hired people from his church for positions for which they were not qualified.
Faculty range from exceptionally competent and hardworking to downright miserable and rude. Standards of collegiality are upheld differently depending on departments. At one point, a senior-level employee from outside of my dept screamed at me on the phone when I asked a simple question on behalf of a student. This would happen routinely - certain employees felt they had the right to behave in an unprofessional manner, and then complain that the individual on the receiving end of this rudeness was at fault! This is symbolic of a dysfunctional culture.
There is a culture of backstabbing at this college. The vision of the place needs a major overhaul, and upper-management needs to hire people who actually have the skills to lead. The people who suffer the most as a result of this are, of course, the students.
