Great idea, poorly executed
Apr 26, 2023 - Engineer in Stokesley, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great modern workspace with scope to work in many areas of the business. The idea of work hard play hard is promoted but rarely possible and is used as a sales gimmick.
Cons
Very negative management, managing director who would rather waste time with petty arguments than actually let qualified engineers get on with work. Micro management, stale people who have worked there too long and think they know better than everyone else
Continue readingThanks for taking time to write a review. We are sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy your experience working with us. We genuinely want to create a space where staff can ‘play hard’. All members of staff have access to our gym, squash court and bouldering wall. As well at the opportunity to play 5-a-side or join in yoga at subsidised rates, to name but a few. We respectfully disagree that it is a 'gimmick' but appreciate we expect these activities to be undertaken outside of when you are working so might not be for you if you have commitments elsewhere. We foster a very open approach when it come to management. All members of staff have access and are encouraged to engage with each other. The MD is not unapproachable or hidden away in an office and if you have questions, thoughts or ideas you can discuss these. Yes, opinions can differ from time to time, one of the quirks of having a building full of engineers. We wish you all the best in your next position. Go well.

A unique place to work where good engineers can thrive
Mar 12, 2023 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Open culture allows contribution anywhere in the business without being constrained by specific job titles. A strong structure helps to know who is responsible for each area of the business and the culture leads to everyone helping each other.
Cons
Those that are not particularly strong (in engineering ability) get some support but are out-performed by more capable staff and this is not the place for them.

A supportive place to work with great opportunities
Oct 5, 2022 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Labman provides a supportive environment for staff from all departments. If you wish to learn and grow in your role there is a refreshing amount of encouragement to do this. Even if you don't have the right skills but you have the desire to learn, there are various workshops, lunch and learn sessions and opportunities to gain experience and use facilities/technology (of which there are many). This has been something I appreciated the most. Culture and values are properly addressed - there is a friendly and inclusive vibe which is good for large factory with lots of staff across various project areas. If you are yourself and happy to work, there is no 'fitting-in' necessary. Better physical and mental wellbeing in general is actively encouraged - again something which I take advantage of. The sports/exercise facilities are also excellent and wide ranging - you can take it or leave it, they're not for everyone. I find Labman to be a friendly and well-managed place to work with plenty to offer.
Cons
Nothing worth commenting on for cons.

Insular, single-minded organisation.

The business has potential, given the ongoing need for automation.
Cons
The Managing Director and complete lack of managerial expertise.

We are very sorry to hear this has been your experience working at Labman. Also a little surprise you had no real Pros to list, such as the 8% across the board pay rise we gave earlier in the year or the increase of annual leave by 5 days, to name a couple. Our goal is to empower staff to take ownership of projects and have involvement in the company. So in one respect yes we don't have lots of layers of management that larger corporations have. We find that on the whole this gives the most opportunity for staff to flourish. We appreciate for some folk a more structured 'line manager' approach might be more suitable. We welcome feedback at any time to the HR team or during one of your 6 monthly appraisals. Hopefully we can turn your experience around so you do enjoy coming to work.

Excellent company, get to work across a broad range of technologies
Apr 5, 2022 - Software DeveloperRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Labman is full of talented, enthusiastic and multi-disciplined engineers. It is an excellent place to learn and accumulate experience fast and being project based you will be working across a broad range of industries and technologies. The staff are excellent and you will have a lot of fun and make new friends. For software developers who are interested in getting experience with hardware integration it is a perfect place to work. Labman also promote a fun and inclusive culture with lots of recreational activities such as squash, climbing, football, running, parties, gym equipment, pottery (new for 2022) and many more. The pay and rewards are good and in line with or slightly better than industry norms (up to 30 days holiday + bank holidays per year).
Cons
Project based working is not for everyone, be sure that you understand all project based work usually includes a small element of crunch to get things over the line. There are limited opportunities for web and cloud development, most of the software is WPF based desktop application development, although this is changing and more opportunities to work in the cloud and web are coming along.

We understand people often only take the time write a review when it is negative or they are unhappy. So we would like to say thankyou for taking the time to pen this. It goes without saying we would have loved to have you stay longer but totally understand the opportunity you were offered was interesting enough not to explore. I'm sure you'll smash it out of the park. Go well, from the Labman team.

I have never been made to feel more welcome into a workplace. Labman truly cares about its employees, visitors and customers and has a positively welcoming atmosphere. It’s fun, hardworking team is an absolute pleasure to be part of. Great perks, a refreshing work life balance and a truly inspiring place!
Cons

Employment Experience
Mar 21, 2022 - Electrical Technician in Northallerton, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Fantastic working environment and company culture. Employees are well looked after, and the employers are more than approachable when issues arise. So many opportunities to better yourself with a company that encourages and wants individuals to do just that (with out applying unwanted pressure) Anyone would be hard pushed to find better employers. There are always other employees around you who go that bit extra to help you.
Cons
I can't find any Cons with Labman Automation at all.... honestly.

Cons
Bipolar managing director that cant trust his employees and would rather stress about a dusty shelf rather than the real issues with his company MD is unapprochable as never know what mood he may be in Constant micromanagement from HR Not many oppertunities for progression unless your face fits Poor pay and staff expected to work unpaid overtime and they justify this by offering "perks" such as a climbing wall Very stressful work enviroment with crazy deadlines for underfunded projects Insanly tight profit margins for one off robot builds No set break times No organisation Timesheet that the MD and HR go through with a fine tooth comb and discipline anyone with more than half an hour down to none project tasks Bizzare interview process (have to wire a plug) Strange internal structures Often a lack of work so can be a lot of standing around and waiting Most the reviews on here are from work experience and uni students and are encouraged by managment to leave a posative review

First of all thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. I'm sure you will appreciate we don't necessarily agree with all the points, but we can only learn an improve by listening. We strive to employ folk who are enthusiastic about engineering and self-motivated to work hard and manage themselves. We understand this way of working is not for everybody and we apologies if you felt ‘Not great’ during your 2 years with us. We wish you all the best in your next endeavour.

Excellent people
Nov 9, 2021 - Field Service Engineer in Liverpool, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
A great community of staff across different engineering disciplines, admin, accounts, etc. Gym, climbing wall, etc. and attached social groups. Plenty of likeminded people. Events like summer BBQ, robot fighting and bonfire night aren't overdone and awkward like your usual 'why would I spend my Saturday with work people?' Staff expected to take responsibility for themselves and work to their own strengths. Lots of opportunities and people tend to find what they like or what they're good at and do more of that.
Cons
A lot of 'finding your own feet' to be done which can feel like being thrown in at the deep end, but there is support if you ask the right people. Ultimately I think this helps to weed out the less-motivated and those who would struggle with the self-management required by the job. Many positive changes coming as the business grows that unavoidably come with teething problems and issues in transition.

Thank you for taking the time to write such a positive review. We are so glad to hear you are enjoying your job. As you mention we are always working to improve our systems and methods of working. We are also looing at implementing additional training guides but in some respects you are correct... we like to get people involved on projects as soon as possible. Hopefully we can fill in the gaps to make it 5* next time :-)
