I worked at Lafayette College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Understanding supervisors for when you needed to leave work early, communicative work environment within the office, and work alongside a diverse and energetic population of students.

    Cons

Some times there are long hours and interdepartmental communication can be difficult. Also, working on weekends happens more often than at other jobs.

    Advice to Management

More organization, collaboration, and planning between departments and organization would be great, especially between departments that are not necessarily student-involved

I have been working at Lafayette College (Less than a year)

    Pros

Small school and thus not overburdened with work. Personalized attention is given to students and great assistance is provided for students.

    Cons

Limited working hours and thus hard to earn enough money from this job. The job is also too competitive thus hard to get. Many people give up in the process.

    Advice to Management

The working days could be increased and also increase the working hours. Some people cannot go climbing because of the rigidness of the climbing wall schedule.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Good salary, opportunity to teach, great 'mental' workout.

    Cons

No job security. Management listens to students and not to faculty. Very less power to faculty. Internal politics and nepotism among engineering faculty at least. The politics in engineering department is really crass. Professors fight like students and students have so much more power than professors that I was warned by my colleagues - don't mess (give lower grades) with students. This place is going to humble you down as you will high school graduates wielding the whip on PhDs ! The evaluate you and if your first semester's evaluations are not good - well, you are doomed. I was an immigrant and they fired me just based on my first semester evaluations. My second semester evaluations were good but were not even considered. I was an engineering professor and was not allowed to use laboratories for my research which somewhat killed my research. The laboratory staff taunted me and fought with me, complaining to the chair, who took their sides ! So a very very bad experience. Please avoid at all cost. I had to teach five courses in my first semester and I was like a donkey of teaching !

A summary of everything: the college has student photographs in the hallways instead of the faculty. And whereas faculty have restricted access on weekends, student keys open all doors :)

    Advice to Management

Please give respect to PhDs. Dont just lure them into the job and then toss them like rag dolls. You have no need to do so. Please consider four semester evaluations before firing a professor. Professors are not handymen (no offense) that they can be hired and fired at will. Do not overload new faculty with five courses !!
