I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You have a lot of independence and the opportunity to flex your hours. The co-workers are nice and supportive. Supervision is valuable.

    Cons

If you're not careful with managing your time and stress, burn-out will be inevitable. There's an expectation of seeing a lot of clients while providing good quality work.

    Advice to Management

    Provide more opportunities for raises.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management not only listens to your ideas and concerns but fully expects you to propose solutions and think outside the box.

Willing to invest heavily in infrastructure while maintaining transparency and sensible budgets.

Few jobs in my field offer this kind of responsibility, hours, pay, healthcare, and retirement benefits. They are very understanding of other life commitments and offer enough time off to handle other life responsibilities.

The people in my department are among the best in their field, and their passion and knowledge is truly inspirational. You will learn a lot. This isn't your typical, bureaucratic, government job.

    Cons

Almost no raises outside of promotion or the yearly cost of living raise. I say almost because they recently enacted a ridiculous policy which *might* get employees with *exceptional* performance reviews a small percentage raise on top of the yearly raise *ONCE* every *THREE* years. I'm literally holding my breath.

There are less opportunities for advancement than in the private sector, but the fact is they do exist if one is willing to wait, and on top of that, continuously improve their performance over time.

Overall though, this is not your typical government job, and if you are willing to work hard, learn, and contribute to the team you will find a very exciting, very rewarding career here.

    Cons

Waukegan location is not in a booming area. Few restaurants available around govt. buildings.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Great co-workers, dedicated to helping clients
-Ability to collaborate with other agencies in the Lake County area
    - Supervisor is supportive

    Cons

-No incentive to excel, only standard cost of living wages
-departments are "siloed" but director of LCHD and the board are attempting to change it.
-Some of the employees at BHS have been at LCHD for over twenty years (with no plans of retirement anytime soon) so there isn't a lot of open positions coming up for new grads or clinicians with licensures. I recommend, if possible, to apply and accept a position as a "flex counselor" as it makes it easier to get in once a position does open up.

    Advice to Management

Be realistic with what the programs can do, find ways to take stress off of employees as there are more clients seeking services due to the Affordable Care Act.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The healthcare package is about the only pro you will receive while working for Lake County.

    Cons

You must posses excellent brown nosing skills to receive a promotion, no worries you must not be very knowledgable of the position given.

    Advice to Management

Management should stop changing policies unnecessarily especially when it slows the work progress down significantly. They should also allow their employees to use the benefit time they have earned as part of the benefits package.

    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Close to Lake Michigan... It's within walking distance... That's about it. So, if you like the lake, then I guess that's a pro.

    Cons

The parking garage is a nightmare at 5:00pm.
    Some elected officials are corrupt.
If you work for certain officials, they will not care about you one bit.
    Rife with nepotism.
Campaign contributions get you a position you're not deserving of.

    Advice to Management

    End corruption of elected officials
