I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time

    Pros

The State's Attorney is progressive and personable. Everyone seems to like him and people are happy overall.

    Cons

Because it's a good place to work many people stay until they can't afford to any longer-which makes it harder to get to the higher divisions and the most challenging work and the higher pay. If no one above you leaves you're stuck with 2-3% pay increases per year. After a while that's just not doable becsuse it's really expensive to live in Lake county and the costs go up by more than that amount each year.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate ways to use funds to pay more in salaries. Talk more regularly with employees about their ideas for general improvements.

    Cons

It's very difficult to gain access to specific jobs, even when you are clearly qualified.

Streamline the application and access process

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

You have a lot of independence and the opportunity to flex your hours. The co-workers are nice and supportive. Supervision is valuable.

    Cons

If you're not careful with managing your time and stress, burn-out will be inevitable. There's an expectation of seeing a lot of clients while providing good quality work.

    Advice to Management

    Provide more opportunities for raises.

    Pros

Colleagues; Dedicated staff; Programs available for patients/clients

    Cons

Middle management; lack of integration amongst programs; paid time off

    Advice to Management

Treat staff with more respect; engage staff in problem solving instead of dictating decisions made without staff input. Management is missing a lot of opportunities to engage staff and strengthen loyalty as well as retention.

    Pros

It is primarily a community service primarily, otherwise the hours and pay are too low. It is interesting to see how people treat the election process

    Cons

There are several 4 hour training sessions and they are required and you do not get paid for them. The day of the election is very long and you cannot leave and only get very short breaks, Yo also cannot use your phone.

I have been working at Lake County (Illinois) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Management not only listens to your ideas and concerns but fully expects you to propose solutions and think outside the box.

Willing to invest heavily in infrastructure while maintaining transparency and sensible budgets.

Few jobs in my field offer this kind of responsibility, hours, pay, healthcare, and retirement benefits. They are very understanding of other life commitments and offer enough time off to handle other life responsibilities.

The people in my department are among the best in their field, and their passion and knowledge is truly inspirational. You will learn a lot. This isn't your typical, bureaucratic, government job.

    Cons

Almost no raises outside of promotion or the yearly cost of living raise. I say almost because they recently enacted a ridiculous policy which *might* get employees with *exceptional* performance reviews a small percentage raise on top of the yearly raise *ONCE* every *THREE* years. I'm literally holding my breath.

There are less opportunities for advancement than in the private sector, but the fact is they do exist if one is willing to wait, and on top of that, continuously improve their performance over time.

Overall though, this is not your typical government job, and if you are willing to work hard, learn, and contribute to the team you will find a very exciting, very rewarding career here.
