    Pros

The people there are great (both fellow workers, faculty, and especially students). The campus is situated in Thunder Bay which is beautiful countryside beside a lake. By being primarily undergraduate, the students get a better experience, getting opportunities often reserved for grad students.

    Cons

The staff room is severely under utilized and there are a few buildings that are beyond showing their age. It could be difficult to live in Thunder Bay who aren't nature buffs. It's a decent sized city, but it's an isolated city. You can expect to see coworkers out in the "real world"

    Advice to Management

Given so much staff turnover, there needs to be greater effort to retrain staff. This means going beyond what comparable universities might offer in terms of compensation and benefits.

    Pros

Faculty care about the progress of their students, even their first-year students, and even first-year classes are kept within reasonable limits. Although neither campus (Thunder Bay and Orillia) is large, the university offers a great range of programs. Faculty are encouraged to be effective teachers, and are supported by the Faculty Development Centre and teaching awards.

    Cons

And there's the rub: contract faculty are deployed to cover many classes so that, if enrolment declines, no full-time faculty will lose their positions as discharging tenured faculty is not an easy procedure. However, full-time faculty are subject to the vagaries of enrolment in that, should enrolment decline, they are likely to find themselves teaching outside their limited areas of specialisation. Then, too, when we lost much of our enrolment in my faculty we lost financial support for attending conferences. Given the northern (main) campus's remoteness, travelling to conferences is always expensive, so financial assistance is critical. The present administration is relatively benign, but there have been periods of confrontation between LUFA (LU Faculty Association) and the administration, and finances dominate the discussions.

    Advice to Management

Switch from hiring occasional or contract faculty to regular, tenure-track faculty, and look for scholars with highly effective teaching skills and a student-centred philosophy.
