I have been working at Lakeland Electric as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

    Good Pay
    Flexible Scheduling
    Great Learning Opportunities
    Really interesting work
Senior workers good about answering questions/helping with difficult tasks

    Cons

No job openings to transition into
    Sometimes work was slow
    No yearly raises for interns

    Advice to Management

Make workers feel confident that they can have a future with the company. Not knowing what will happen to the plant after Unit 3 closes leaves some workers feeling unsure about their future.

    A Paycheck and some benefits.

Be more professional and lose the red neck attitude.

I worked at Lakeland Electric full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The benefits are better than most. The pay is topnotch for the Polk County area. It has room for improvement but is apparently getting improvements made. If you work for the power plants you will feel lIke you're part of a family.

    Cons

Management is hobbled by City Government interference. It is in need of a true Utility Commission with actual experienced professionals leading the company.

    Advice to Management

Get the best contract you can manage. Please realize that without the generation side of the business , you will be missing out on great opportunities for the future.

I have been working at Lakeland Electric full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work can be diverse and and interesting. Electricity is an essential service and it is great to be working on something useful.

    Cons

Place is paralyzed by politics and inept management. City management is even worse and does not value its employees. City Commission is too trusting of incompetent management and unable to see through constant stream of propaganda. Management team is not focused on sound business principles and the best interest of the rate payers. Would not advise new employees to seek a long term career here; it is too far gone.

    Advice to Management

Manage the politics with more integrity, learn the utilty business, get back to fundamentals, focus on growing the utility, and recognize the few talented people that are left. There are too many of you with strong opinions about things that you don't know or understand; therefore, be more open minded and listen to those who do.
