I have been working at Lam Research full-time

    Pros

The best thing about working at Lam is the people. I have worked at Lam for 20 years. The thing I like most about coming to work is the friendships I have formed in my 20 years at Lam. Lam also is a strong believer in a work-life balance. People at Lam work hard but are also able to enjoy their well deserved time off. Lam also does a lot of great things to support our local communities. For example, the Heart and Soles 5k race to support the YMCA and Boys and Girls club to help promote exercise and healthy eating for local youth.

    Cons

This is a good problem to have but Lam's growth is happening at such a fast rate that we are struggling to keep up with customer demands.

    Pros

-Benefits are great! The company takes great care of their people.
    -Pay is above average
    -Constant evaluation for advancement
    -Laid back flexible management
-Most employees are aggressive and will put aside differences and pull together to accomplish a common goal.

    Cons

-Employees feel entitled as though the company owes them something besides a paycheck
-Some employees think Mutual Trust and Respect means act fake to your face and complain about you behind your back. I respect people enough to be open and honest with them even if it hurts. That is frowned upon at Lam
-Forced to document all communication to defend yourself when fingers are pointed your way.
-Information is often withheld from another group for fear they will use it against your group... Not open communication.

    Advice to Management

Clarify what you mean about each of the core values. (see above)
It is not really appropriate for employees to rate their managers.

    Pros

Very customer-focused. Top leadership is extremely strong, perhaps the best in the industry. Opportunities for rapid promotion in title. Highly technical and data driven environment. Very little politics. Nice profit-sharing program.

    Cons

Lam does not have enough employees, so the workload per employee is very high. Long work hours--including frequent weekends--are the norm. For some employees, frequent and unpredictable travel.

    Advice to Management

Increase compensation to reward the hard work that employees are putting in. Hire more people to allow current employees a better work-life balance. Increase the number of company-sponsored events.

    Pros

Lam is a very well run company. They believe in a promote from within philosophy, which provides advancement opportunities. The company is plowing a huge amount of money into R&D which bodes well for continued market growth in both etch and clean. As with any company, your direct manager can have a large impact on your day-to-day job/work life, but in general, work/life balance is respected and promoted.

    Cons

The biggest negative about working at Lam is the nature of the business it is in. The semi conductor business is very cyclical, and that means at times Lam (and all other semi companies) have layoffs. This is not a knock on Lam, but an industry as a whole.

    Pros

Lam has a fantastic atmosphere where everybody seems happy to help everybody else in order to succeed even if they're delaying their work some. The company pays well, and for me there was tons of overtime (and double-time for that matter). I constantly had lots of work, but it wasn't dull or tedious. There's much to learn here and become engaged in.

    Cons

If you don't like working a lot or long hours don't look here. Lam will take up a good amount of time, which may not be good for you if you have a very active outside life. Also, you pretty much need a PhD to move up the ladder here so if you don't want to get one or don't have the background to get the correct one (chem, nuclear, materials science...) there isn't much upward mobility for you.

    Pros

Great management, good pay, focused, challenging work. Shouldn't have left, but I was moving to another city.

    Cons

Could use some more training up front so it is easier to settle in.

    Advice to Management

Keep on doing a wonderful job!

    Pros

    - Top-notch technology in dry etch
    - Market share leader
    - Highly-qualified, motivated work force
    - Heavy R&D investment
    - Competitive salary and top benefits in semi-tool industry of the Bay Area
    - Practices business in an ethical way
    - Support to employee's day-to-day life is outstanding (Help Desk, HR, IT, Benefits, lab supplies, Logistics, laptop, iPhone/BB, etc.)

    Cons

    - Very often it is stressful to meet customer's demo requirements (Specs and timelines)
    - Need to invest more on metrology tools (SEM, CD-SEM, etc.) to cut down queue time for engineers
    - Compared to other semi-tool companies, although Lam had relatively less lay-off's but still had laid-off people during 08/09 downturn
    - Middle and 1st-line managers are mostly promoted from technical positions. They are lack of good interpersonal skills. Need to offer them effective training

    Advice to Management

    - Keep Lam's style as in Newberry's time
    - Keep lean on top/middle management
    - During the downturn consider lay-off as the last last measure to keep company's reputation and employees' morale and loyalty
