    Pros

Brilliant, talented people very dedicated to the mission. Fascinating cases. Broad national reach. Very well respected organization. Financially stable (relative to donation-dependent nonprofits).

    Cons

Salaries can be low, especially for NY and LA. Not as much focus on developing new clients as might be helpful. Attorneys have less overall discretion than in other legal careers.

    Advice to Management

Try to make the organization less NY focused. It drains resources (everything is more expensive in NY, so why base so many administrative jobs there?). Focus more on core competencies (legal) rather than trying to branch out into other areas of advocacy that other organizations are already doing.

  3. "Great organization bogged down by old school, close-minded leadership."

I worked at Lambda Legal full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent mission. You can feel like you are actually making a difference in people's lives. Great health and retirement benefits, especially for a nonprofit. The NY office is spacious and has beautiful views.

    Cons

Very disorganized. Most people in senior positions seem like they are just riding their jobs out for a few more years until they retire and they don't care about making the organization any better or more efficient. There are a lot of "B Team" players that stick around. Any one who is any good ends up getting frustrated and leaves. It takes forever to get anything done because people are always out of the office and even minor decisions need sign-off from nearly everyone in the department. Lots of micro-managing.

    Advice to Management

Do more to keep your star employees and get rid of the bad ones. Empower employees to actually do their jobs effectively instead of meddling and micromanaging every tiny thing. Understand that your top priority is the people that the organization serves, not office politics.

    Pros

If you are passionate about GLBT equality and issues and are willing to work with little supervision, it is an excellent atmosphere.

    Cons

Because their offices are spread out across the country, weekly staff meetings (read: conference calls) are required. Information is repeated and time is wasted.

    Advice to Management

A better process needs to be in place for communication. There are a lot of inefficiencies that, if remedied, would lead to greater efficacy.

    Pros

Great networking opportunities for summer interns

    Cons

Supervision was somewhat hands off– this could be seen as either a pro or a con.

    Pros

Great mission, great office in NYC with a wonderful group of dedicated people. There are opportunities to learn more about their cause and whom they serve.

    Cons

Wish interns would get paid, but that's understandable since most interns nowadays don't.

I worked at Lambda Legal full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A very exciting place to work, where you see real change happening before your eyes. Decent benefits, some very passionate, smart coworkers. Great place for a "yes man."

    Cons

Stagnant, close-minded leadership. A lot of petty politics, smack-talking and power struggles. Terrible pay until you get into upper level positions.

    Advice to Management

Time to retire or move on. So much advice is given to HR, but none of it was ever seriously considered. Diversity is one of your greatest weaknesses.

I have been working at Lambda Legal full-time

    Pros

Working for a good cause with good people to work with

    Cons

Low pay, management is not always in touch with staff needs

    Advice to Management

Appreciate the hard work of staff members. Everyone is replaceable but the hard work we have contributed over the years is not.
