I worked at Lane Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

All the people I worked with were nice and supportive. My manager was understanding if I needed to adjust my hours some weeks in order to deal with appointments.

    Cons

Students sometimes want you to do their homework for them and get upset when you won't.

I have been working at Lane Community College full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Gives fair pay and benefits.

    Cons

Plans a lot for the future but never acts on the proper path to manage the college long term. Poor management and terrible money/bugetary processes hamper the ability of the college to get out of a slump in student enrollment. In the IT department there is no upwardly mobile path for any position and the loss of personel hampers getting any work done. Too much departmental politics hampers day to day processes .

    Advice to Management

Don't short your IT department of staff and funding. It has become no different than what the electricians and plumbers do to keep the college running. It is a core requirement for any successful education establishement now to have stable on-line and on the ground technical resources.

I worked at Lane Community College full-time

    Pros

Lane helps many people get a good start or enhance their careers. There are many deeply dedicated employees. Salary and benefits are good.

    Cons

There is an alarmingly high level of dysfunction especially at upper levels of management. There is no protection for mid-level managers. When disgruntled union employees take a dislike to a manager and set out to harm the manager's career, upper management will stab the mid-manager in the back THEN throw her or him under the bus; arranging for the manager's departure without a word of thanks for hard work and accomplishment. The new president does not bring improvement to this travesty.

    Advice to Management

Treat your hard working managers with some appreciation and respect, and be supportive.
