Lack of Leadership
May 24, 2023 - Staff Engineer in Los Angeles, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Increased exposure to larger projects across the country, learn about a lot of different areas not just stuck doing one thing, President seems to care about employees but is detached from what is actually happening, high quality employees for most part, lots of training opportunities.
Cons
Work life balance is not possible; hard to see a project through from start to finish because you get pulled off to go do something else; they teach you how to do something but not why and then get upset when mistakes are made; some higher level managers have zero leadership/people skills and should not be over a team; older generations are holding back progress and not using apps and programs that would make work much easier; the different divisions (geotech/environmental/data management) don’t work together/share info.

High Stress - High Reward
Mar 13, 2023 - Project Engineer in Parsippany, NJRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Langan has some of the best professionals in the field in its vast network of offices. It is a rarity that you ever have a scenario that someone else hasn't experienced some component of the challenge you face. The ability of the company to connect you with that person is not something you can get at most firms. Being able to develop as a professional with that support system has been immeasurably valuable to me.
Cons
Financial success is the main motivation behind operations. If it needs to be done tomorrow, you work to get it done and meet client needs. While the consulting world is driven on this ideology, it sometimes can feel like the person doing that work is lost in the rush of it all. While the financial reward for your work is often seen in your pay stub, sometimes it doesn't feel like it is appreciated or even known for upper management.

Not a good place to work
May 9, 2023 - Staff Geotechnical Engineer in New York, NYRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
-a lot of the coworkers are young, we had a lot of fun together, sports leagues - good health benefits
Cons
-never saw my coworkers except for outside of work because the working hours were brutal. We were expected to be on site most of the time from 6am- 3pm, so yes you get to finish early (sometimes) but had to wake up at 4:30-5 am in Order to transit up to an hour to make it to the site. Walking to the subway at this hour didn’t feel comfortable and a car was rarely offered unless the site was inaccessible by subway. - your schedule for the following week was put out every Friday, sometimes even the Monday of the week . Despite being schedule to work from office/from home multiple times, I ended up getting calls early in the morning or late at night asking if I could go to site. I scheduled my personal life around my work schedule so if I’m scheduled to be work from home then I’m not prepared to jump out and run to a site, especially if I have other responsibilities like kid, dogs, ect. - you only are allowed 10 days of vacation. This makes it nearly impossible to plan trips, especially because the schedule for the week was always released so late. They really don’t care about your work life balance - had to work multiple times until late at night even on Friday’s, just to get no acknowledgement of my time or efforts in return -pay could be better - managers don’t really explain anything to you, kind of just expected to know it - long days on site in the freezing cold weren’t cancelled, and we were just expected to suck it up. - would have taken me as long as 8 years to ever become a project manager Overall worst place I’ve ever worked, if you want a life don’t work here.

Pros
- Everyone is very helpful and friendly - Strong CAD team - Company and CEO is very open and informative - Pretty progressive and staying with the times (technology wise and work-from-home wise) - Company does not require employees to jump through a bunch of useless hoops like some other companies - Good place to work
Cons
- The vacation day accrual rate and maximum amount of vacation hours possible is not great. Very old-school. Max amount is 20 days and not until 15 years of experience. - I’ve talked to few other companies to compare pay/benefits and I could be earning 20days right now and eventually 30 days. - 401k match could be a little better. - Pretty stressful

Pros
A great culture in my local Langan office. A plethora of opportunities to work on local and national projects. The hybrid office model has really boosted moral.
Cons
Some groups don't encourage you to partake in business development opportunities because of billable/chargeable goals. This has been observed specifically with the environmental practice. Although bonus's are wonderful, base pay could be more competitive with others in the industry. However, combined + base pay puts you in a very competitive salary.

Best place to work!
May 12, 2023 - Staff Engineer in Oakland, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great place to work. Very healthy work culture.
Cons
Haven’t really seen one yet…

Pros
Great people, everyone is very friendly and welcoming. Decent training.
Cons
When work is slow employees are expected to use vacation hours to boost productivity. Very big emphasis on maintaining billable hours. If there's no work for you, you'll be expected to sit in the office all day waiting for work and if nothing comes up you'll be expected to use your earned vacation time for the hours spent sitting at the office. Not sustainable as employees are only allowed 10 days vacation per year. Keep asking for work but not enough for 40 hours a week. End up helping out with other offices, but not all office do things the same way leading to confusion and time wasted. Rates are high and budgets are tight. Often don't have enough budget to spend an adequate amount of time on the work. Have spent the last 3 months worrying about being laid off.

Great Civil Engineer Environmental Firm
Mar 10, 2023 - Senior Project ManagerRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Langan is ahead of the A/E/C industry in terms of the DE&I initiatives. The ERGs at Langan are top tier and have created community across the firm. DEI initiatives are encouraged and when employees don't see change happening, they push back and question and management listens. This is so important in any organization. The CEO does quarterly CEO updates to the entire firm, and will answer quite literally any question for an hour afterwards. He is an open book and honest with all employees, not many can say that about their CEOs. Employees are proud to work at Langan but it's not a cult, which is the vibe I get from quite a few of our competitors. Employees are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work. Even as the pandemic 'ends' Langan has adopted a hybrid work model. Employees are able to work from home as little or as much as they would like to and Langan will provide home equipment and a stipend to buy a desk or accessories for home. If you're sick of hauling yourself into an office to do video calls, then maybe its time to make the switch to Langan.
Cons
I believe consulting as an industry is difficult. Your time can sometime not be your own as we need to meet client requests right away. This does not work for everyone, and many burn out in consulting. Langan has attempted to help course correct some of this, but a lot of times it depends on the clients and what they need. Entry level grads sometimes do not like field work and the long field hours - but those are viewed as important to build a solid base for their careers. Like any company, some managers are amazing and others need to continue to improve.

3 Years with Langan
Mar 9, 2023 - Staff Engineer in New Haven, CTRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
After looking for other opportunities briefly I was confirmed we have some of the most competitive pay. We also have a comp-time program that allows staff level employees to be paid out straight time for all overtime work. There is a great opportunity to work on large and interesting projects. Lots of diversity of clients and projects.
Cons
Long hours can be expected at times but you are reimbursed because of the comp time program. As long as you have good managers, this should not be too common of an occurance.
Thank you for your feedback!
