    Limited guidance, unhealthy environment

Mar 20, 2022 - Project Manager in New York, NY

    Business Outlook

    Pros

High profile projects, junior staff are great to work with (before they leave for another employer).

    Cons

Prepare to be thrown into the fire. The performative nature of “work-life balance” and “diversity” initiatives are especially frustrating. After-work correspondence and weekend work is discouraged (via the occasional mass email by HR), yet essentially no one adheres to the suggestion, and there is an expectation from local management to sacrifice all waking hours and to make your social life and work life one in the same. Diversity initiatives are marketed externally but are not actually reflected in management demographics. High turnover is a product of the tough work environment. Asking for help or needing a break is generally ignored by supervisors and shareholders.

    High profile projects, mixed experience

Oct 25, 2022 - Senior Staff Engineer in New York, NY
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

You'll have exposure to high profile projects, and have the opportunity to learn from extremely driven and ambitious management. Managers run a tight ship, which produces high quality work but can be time-consuming. Transfer opportunities are excellent, and it's possible to change engineering disciplines within the company. The office facilities and home office stipend are great.

    Cons

The people who excel at Langan are very competitive and are those who center their social life around the company. Networking and participation in industry organizations in your spare time is emphasized. For some people this is achievable, but for most, this can lead to burnout. Working early mornings, late nights and weekends is normalized, and often compulsory. Langan are working on diversity initiatives, but recruitment from a select few colleges (e.g. Cornell, Columbia) hinders the diversity of the applicant pool. The courtesy two-week notice resignation period was not honored, which was disappointing.

    Senior Staff Engineer

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Great co-workers, flexible workplace options, high-profile projects and many opportunities to learn if you seize them.

    Cons

Little-to-no work life balance. You work above your level but are not properly compensated; there seems to be no fair or transparent system for compensating employees.

    cool projects, grow your career

    Mar 11, 2013 -
    Recommend
    CEO Approval
    Business Outlook

    Pros

at this company the staff get to work on cool, complex, and high profile projects. great place to accelerate your career. the managers involve you in the direct discussions with the client, so you get max exposure and learn the business. they don't pigeonhole you into doing mundane tasks with no background on big picture.

    Cons

having a direct line to clients means full impact of clients demands for quick turnaround and sometimes short notice. this can lead to spikes of long hours. but the managers let you balance it out the next week after deadlines pass ("comp time". leave early, personal day, etc).
