I have been working at Las Vegas Metro Police Department full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The benefits and salary are great. Flexible work shifts and most people are very understanding of family and personal situations. The work is fulfilling and rewarding, but demanding. It is fast-paced and multi-tasking is a must.

    Cons

People tend to forget that they work in a public sector, for the people. There can be disconnects between personality types and the management. As it is a demanding and fast-paced, some individuals still see it as 'government work,' or do not put it at the level of importance it really deserves. Some do not take pride in their work product and it leads to discontent and negativity.

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to further your own career and pay attention to what is important.

I have been working at Las Vegas Metro Police Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fulfilling but challenging career. Typically takes 15 or more years to attain this rank. Tremendous opportunity to help people and the community in which we live. Meaningful work.

    Cons

Can be challenging to a regular family lifestyle due to the hours worked and the constant intrusion of emergencies on your personal life. It is critical that you maintain a healthy lifestyle and a work/life balance.

I have been working at Las Vegas Metro Police Department full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-employees at worker level are fantastic high quality individuals.

    Cons

Conmplete disconnect between upper management and where work takes place. Upper management exists in their own little bubble disconnected from the realities of police work. The beatings will not continue until morale improves as they could care less. Have no clue how their actions and decision making translates at the implementation level or are too arrogant to care. Absolutely NO concern for welfare of patrol. Management does not focus on crime and criminals but rather focuses on their own employees as criminals.

    Advice to Management

You have forced out or fired any independent thinking, moral, decision making management and replaced it with butt kissers and yes men who's whole goal in life is to get promoted. Nobody on the staff dares speak up to defend what is right, just or moral as it means career suicide. Your whole department is MISERABLE. Most employees speak only of getting out of here. I continually witness employees with less than 5 years speaking of getting out of here or how many years till they can retire. You have spawned crazed management hell bent on writing up, punishing and getting after your own employees as though they are some sort of problem. Frankly there is no advice that can be given to management that JUST DOES NOT GET IT and has formed their own realities to exist in. Through all the experience I have in management and I have a lot, I have allways learned the concepts of taking care of your employees, not abusing them.

    Pros

Big department, many different specialized units. Decent opportunities for career growth. The pay is decent for law enforcement jobs. Hiring is getting ready to slow down.

    Cons

Huge budget cuts due to problems in Las Vegas. Job satisfaction can depend a lot on your chain of command.

    Advice to Management

Find ways to value your employees. Develop better incentives for good work. Set standards and eliminate those who refuse to meet them.
