I worked at Lawrence Berkeley Lab as an intern (More than a year)

    Pros

Many divisions and groups. There are lots of collaborations going on and opportunities to take on different projects. Great place to network and learn from the best scientists.

    Cons

The Life Sciences division is separate from the main campus and you have to take a shuttle from downtown Berkeley to Emeryville, which can be a little isolating.

I worked at Lawrence Berkeley Lab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great science happening everywhere here! It's known for some of the greatest contributions to science in the world. For a postdoc, there are many opportunities for collaboration.

    Cons

High institutional overhead cost at the lab when you apply for funding, so a lot of your grant money doesn't really go to your science. Pay for postdocs is low, even though they are the workhorses of the labs.

I worked at Lawrence Berkeley Lab full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great coworkers and work life balance. Also the lab is full of interesting experiments and facilities operated by smart people.

    Cons

Postdocs make significantly less than all administrative, technical staff, and postdocs at other federal labs in the area. Funding is languishing.

    Advice to Management

    Pay postdocs more.
