I worked at Lawrence Public School USD 497 (Less than a year)

    Pros

Paid all the insurance for me

    Cons

Literally nothing ever gets done in any capacity ever. Other staffed harrassed me, slammed doors to my classroom, screamed at me in front of my students, belittled me in front of staff, admin does nothing when issues brought up, told to wait weeks to meet instead of addressing the issues at hand

    Advice to Management

Stop letting the loudest and rudest voice run the show, stand up for something once in a while don't allow ANY staff member to be openly harassed just because you're too anxious to deal with it, it's your job.

    Pros

Health insurance is 100% paid if you're a FT employee, benefits seem to be on the generous side. Upper management personnel have a "work hard, play hard" attitude which helps with the atmosphere. Employee appreciation luncheons are very welcome and serve as a good morale booster.

    Cons

The amount of work that staff are required to do is tremendous. It creates situations where coworkers become very toxic and try to make their problem, your problem. Training programs are at best, very abysmal. Management is aware of issues and tries to support you the best they can but they are often busy putting out their own little fires.

I have been working at Lawrence Public School USD 497 full-time

    Pros

Some very solid people work for the organization. Great students and parents, as with any district.

    Cons

Upper management, specifically IT, does not understand how to get things done or how to communicate out about plans, next steps, or vision. Actions are reactionary and do not reflect the consensus that is sold as "having acquired". A click has been developed that can't see their own faults. Additionally, there is a portion of the certified staff that simply need to "get over themselves". They're not the best, nor the brightest in the state. Stop acting like you are

    Pros

Teachers are geared toward the students and their success. Teachers adapt new technology to make things interesting.

    Cons

Budget cuts are hard in any school district.

    Advice to Management

Offer more training for non certified staff.

I have been working at Lawrence Public School USD 497 part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There are many nice employees. It's nice to have a school schedule. Fringe benefits are paid for by the district.

    Cons

There are too many non-paid days. The wage for paraeducators is lower than other districts in the state. In addition, there are too many non-contract days which is detrimental to paras who are already struggling to make ends meet.

    Advice to Management

Please get to know the paras. Request input and be accessible to hear the needs and concerns of your employees. Learn the names of your employees, or at least make time to greet your employees and students. Don't isolate yourself from your faculty, staff, and students.
